When the story of the Third Reich is told, several explanations are put forward for
how a party that gained only 2.6 per cent of votes in the German elections of 1928
was able to establish a radical dictatorship just five years later:

the Wall Street Crash, the legacy of the First World War and Hitler’s charisma, to name a few.

But one aspect that often receives less attention is
💥the influence of Germany’s elite on the events of the late 1920s and early 1930s. 💥

According to University of Edinburgh historian Stephan Malinowski, contributor to a new BBC Two series, The Rise of the Nazis, a small group of powerful actors played a critical role in the creation of the Third Reich

@cdarwin @Scotter Seasons 5 & 6 of Peaky Blinders do a remarkable job of illustrating exactly how it happened. Because its story is based in the UK, it likely resonates even more strongly with Americans. It’s all just so vividly obvious how the Germans could have bought it.

Social Security benefits could be dramatically changed under new bill https://www.newsweek.com/social-security-benefits-could-dramatically-changed-new-bill-1893741

rlpaulprodn,
@rlpaulprodn@mstdn.social avatar

@black_intellect This was introduced by a Democratic member of a Republican-controlled House; one that has accomplished nothing, except passing essential bills and one foreign assistance bill. It is also late April of an election year. Articles like this are irresponsible.

rlpaulprodn,
@rlpaulprodn@mstdn.social avatar

@joeinwynnewood Stories about bills being introduced are garbage stories. Stories about bills going to the Floor are worthwhile. This is something that Capitol Hill reporters just do not understand, and it’s why press secretaries continually plant these kinds of stories (I did it myself for six years in the Senate). A story like this is equivalent to a story where the Congressman says something in passing, or in a speech. It is 100% aspirational and 0% news.

is The Blues Brothers, by Daniel de Visé, about the making of the movie by that name. For someone who grew up in the 50s 60s and 70s like I did, this is a fascinating reminiscence of those times. 1st couple chapters are exclusively on John Belushi & where he came from, & then gradually other contemporaries he played with come in, , . Haven’t got to yet. Recommend.

rlpaulprodn,
@rlpaulprodn@mstdn.social avatar

@qurlyjoe Because you are “largely ignorant of the music they celebrate and the artists who made the music,” you don’t see the massive cultural appropriation that the Blues Brothers phenomenon represented. Two rich white guys played the music of Black men who mostly died in obscurity. In doing so, those white guys made themselves richer and even more famous. It’s disgusting, in retrospect.

@Free_Press @julescelt01 First, while the headline says Breitbart is down 87%, the article does not. It lumps them in with others that total 87% (Townhall, Free Beacon, &Breitbart plummet a whopping 87%).Second: Deep in the article: *CNN is down 20%. *New York Times is down 22%. *Washington Post is down 45%. I understand the desire to say “Ha, ha! MAGA news consumption is down!” But perhaps it might have made more sense to look at the problem & its cause more broadly.

I am so sick of this shit. Our country has wasted two important decades being governed by @Foxnews. And we are all just watching them try to make Trump president again. A known traitor, who will now be in so much debt, he’ll have no choice but to sell America out to someone. And still, we just let Fox and its allies run amok. it’s sickening that we can’t take them down. We’re inert and culpable.

rlpaulprodn,

rlpaulprodn,
@rlpaulprodn@mstdn.social avatar

@Catawu @shoq @Foxnews “Should be” or is? And what’s the definition of “technically” here? Are you expressing an opinion with this comment? I’m not clear. My understanding of the Communications Act that set up the FCC is that it refers to towers. There are specific regulations about attending to the tower, monitoring the tower, etc. That’s the FCC’s jurisdiction. They also regulate phones.

Valuable, science-based debunks of firehose of lies started to be published by world media, for example this one from BBC, citing numerous historians:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-68255302

A question: why are they popping up after the interview, when its contents were 99% known well in advance? As usual, Western countries and media took an entirely responsive attitude, after easily predictable harm has been done, and didn’t use a great opportunity to disarm Russia’s massive disinformation campaign.

rlpaulprodn,
@rlpaulprodn@mstdn.social avatar

@kravietz So, you’re saying that people in media organizations should have predicted that this is what he was going to focus on in the interview? I’m really not clear what your critique is here. He said something, they debunked it. You’re saying they should have been debunking it all along? I really don’t know what you want.

Abortion on FL Ballot!

A coalition of Florida abortion rights supporters surpassed the required number of signatures needed to put a referendum on next year's ballot, according to the latest data from the state Division of Elections.

Why it matters: If advocates succeed in enshrining abortion rights in Florida's constitution through the ballot measure, it would have massive implications for reproductive health care across the South.

Question for any out there: how do you interpret slurs in a part?

For example, if you see a melody or arpeggio spanning a few octaves in a bar or two, and it's obviously one single gesture, do you play it differently if it's under a slur than if it isn't? Which do you prefer to see?

I've noticed I'm not at all consistent about this in my scoring, which makes it look like I want different things when that's not necessarily so.

@mcmullin @teledyn @composers If we’re doing Bernstein anecdotes (sorry, I can’t help w/your harp question) - one autumn, he & his family were staying in Westport, CT. When the Jewish High Holiday came, they went to my synagogue. They sat him in the 1st row. There were windows into the sanctuary that were 7 ft. off the ground. I was 4 or 5, but I remember adults coming in and jumping up to look in these high windows to see if they could see him.
