If you're still using Chrome in 2024, the only question is why?

Chrome is like other Google properties: it talks a big game about privacy as something that other companies should do.

For the next five years, thanks to a lawsuit, you will get a privacy protection in Chrome Incognito that you get by default in modern browsers.

This is the kick-off post in a series in which I'm going to explore things that we could change about the Web. I look forward to being wrong in public a lot, hopefully in useful ways!

Have you ever wondered what the Web is for? Well, if we're going to build a better one, it might be worth spending a moment considering the question. This is the second installment in my series on building a better web.

We need to have the conversation that technologists aren't having: how do we make search on the web not be terrible? It's good that Google's monopoly is being investigated, but we need to think about more durable solutions.

It may be less challenging than you'd think.

If you have experience with or knowledge of international schools in Brussels, or know someone who does, I'd really appreciate some advice!

Hey! Do you care about the future of the web? Do you have thoughts about where to take it?

Assume everything is an option and you could change anything about the W3C: I would like (in a personal capacity) to hear what your thoughts are!

The web is badly in need of better governance, or even governance at all for that matter. Changing the few institutions we have could be a great first step.

The W3C is looking for a CEO — could that be you?

You can support Google or you can support democracy. You can't have it both ways.

Their bus model rides on demonetising journalism and they don't mind mob-style threats to keep it that way.

Argentina, now the Netherlands... 💔

The fascist wave will continue until we build new institutions that can deal with the complexity of the world we've created, that are powerful enough to counteract these novel concentrations of power and the inequalities they support. 🌳✊🏻

Browsers are hugely load-bearing in the Web's architecture, and yet they haven't changed very much in quite a while. If the Web is indeed for user agency, we should take a hard look at our user agents to see if they might not need improvement.

Getting ready for week 2 of US vs Google Search? Here are some thoughts about how to fix search on the Internet. https://berjon.com/fixing-search/

@robin@mastodon.social avatar

The Internet is allowing us to build a richer, more complex society but the way in which we Internet today is failing to support the governance systems that a more complex world requires.

I take a look at why these issues are related, try to develop an intuition for a way forward, and point at the emerging field that is coming together to build that future.

Why yes, streaming app, I agree that putting the show I've been watching every night this week six fucking clicks away so you can prioritise your recommendation drivel instead makes total fucking sense!

If (like me) you benefit one way or another from the US tech sector, on the 50th anniversary of the US-led coup in Chile it's worth taking some time to reckon with the fact that American tech dominance was a deliberate geopolitical strategy that caused massive suffering.

We've been having many conversations about what to build as the digital sphere burns. Decentralisation sounds good, but what does that really require of us?

Tech ethics is like compost and reusable grocery bags: it's great to do it but if you think that it'll dent the big structural problems I have bad news for you.

Excited to see Noēma publishing this from @mariafarrell and I (with a much bigger contribution from Maria).

The internet, and us with it, suffers under extraction & monoculture. We can revitalise it by applying lessons from conservation ecology.

If you haven't read it yet, this weekend would be a great time to find out why this article from @mariafarrell and I in Noema Magazine made it to The Syllabus's "Best of Journalism" this week! (See https://www.the-syllabus.com/cabinet/syllabus/3KabNgk-0K?__s=xxxxxxx&__s=xxxxxxx)

For the avoidance of doubt: at no point have I or will I ever give an interview in my capacity as vice-chair of the W3C's Board of directors. Any indication to the contrary is disingenuous.
