if you haven't seen this I highly recommend watching. a video about Tomorrow Corporation internal programming and debugging tools, and it's incredible what they have behind the scenes of their games https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72y2EC5fkcE #gamedev

sean_earle,
@sean_earle@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink A fantastic video, their time travel stuff blew me away. The sheer amount of state they must track to do that is mind blowing (or I guess perfectly recalculatable deltas?)

a poll for Free Software enthusiasts specifically

please only vote if you have strong positive views regarding copyleft licenses for software and cultural works

Can you name several video games you've played and enjoyed that match this criteria:

  1. The game was first published in 2023 or 2024.

  2. The entire game (all source code, art, music, etc) is freely available under appropriate open source licenses (permissive or copyleft)

If the answer is "yes", I'd love to hear about them.

sean_earle,
@sean_earle@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva Voted yes because I've been playing Mindustry. It's FOSS but I paid to have it on Steam to support the developers

@aeva ah bugger, I read your post as "You played in 2023/2024", that's my bad sorry!

I sent my physical therapist a link to a SIGGRAPH talk today lol.

We were talking about rhythm and exercise games, and I remarked that pole dancing is definitely the most surprising form of VR exercise I've ever heard of people doing, and, well, she seemed just as astonished to hear that as I was when I first saw the SIGGRAPH talk about it.

sean_earle,
@sean_earle@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva As someone who does pole dancing, this has been a wild rabbit hole to dive down. I couldn't imagine doing it while strapped with VR gear! Very impressive and interesting application of the technology and interesting to read the challenges they had to overcome

so 1password 7 stopped working on a browser with last update, cause I guess they really want everyone on 1P8, but downgrading versions worked for me.

sean_earle,
@sean_earle@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink I recently switched to version 8 for work, what's the reason for wanting to stay on 7? I was annoyed I had to install it from outside the app store but not sure the difference other than that

sean_earle,
@sean_earle@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink damn, that really sucks, they're very good reasons for not wanting to move on

@helvetica @games_by_jack Is there any chance of these ever being offset by 12 hours? These happen at 3am for me which just isn't doable

@helvetica@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I have been working on Puzzmo, in secret, for almost two years now with @orta.

Puzzmo is the place to play daily newspaper puzzle games online.

TODAY we are launching a brand new daily crossword (designed to be approachable like all of my games) alongside with 2 other new games from me (and 3 older ones reimagined)

During prelaunch we only let in 500 people a day, so get at em!

I hope you enjoy Puzzmo!

Call for experience: I've got an old ~2006 Intel iMac, CoreDuo -- NOT Core2Duo! I.e. 32-bit only -- that I'd like to repurpose as a DVD player since it has a remote control, but is there any 32-bit Linux it could run that would be up to date enough to also access Netflix, Disney+ etc?

sean_earle,
@sean_earle@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@kroc Debian still officially supports 32bit CPUs so that would be what I'd try first. I've no experience personally with it on macs but have heard good things

It's a statsim where you turn Cthulhu into an idol!
Raise her stats, manage her schedule, and try not to stress her out. Can you help her amass an army of followers, or will she destroy the world first?!

The open-source fantasy console just got Python support!

And a Rust template that compiles to WASM!

And a Vi mode! :'D

This all makes me really happy, and will be great for doing game dev workshops for different audiences!

These features are not in a release yet, but you can compile it from source: https://github.com/nesbox/TIC-80

sean_earle,

@blinry I just noticed this said Vi mode, I'm actually excited now. I've always wanted to dabble with this using the mruby bindings but the editor put me off.

If having an on-screen cursor and moving it around with the analog stick is called "free cursor" navigation, what do you call the old way of doing stuff? e.g. pressing up/down/left/right moves you between different navigable screen elements
