passed a Republican-written bill that would tie $14.3 billion in military aid to for its war with Hamas to domestic spending cuts, defying a veto threat from President Biden and bipartisan opposition in the Senate.

Republicans pushed through the measure on a mostly party-line vote of 226 to 196

USB ports in wall sockets at home?

(boost for reach)

skolima,
@skolima@hachyderm.io avatar

@cstross @Zeugs @dashdsrdash @ryanc @nf3xn Many modern builds will now have 3 outlets that can top 10kW, though: the air conditioning / heat pump, the induction hob (for very short bursts) and the car charging point (11 kW for 5-8 hours at a time). Those in EU use connectors and sockets with a 1960's design standard, but the power draw is not something that'd be expected in a house before the "electrify everything" push.

skolima,
@skolima@hachyderm.io avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi Got 5k km in a so far. Love it. It's bigger than I'd prefer, that's my only complaint. I mostly do motorway driving. Charging infra could be better (and marked on road signs) - I have to plan charging stops ahead instead of just pulling up at a station. But I tend to plan trips beforehand anyway. And it charges like a beast - can pull 240 kW current, fastest on the market right now.

@jon Not too bad either. Horseback would also be interesting, though quite likely the most expensive.

One of the designated routes starts from a XI century monastery in a small town where my family hails from (Mogilno) and I keep making plans...

    @SecurityWriter With low powered cars I've never noticed any difference. After a few tries, I've always stuck to the cheapest supported fuel.

    skolima,
    @skolima@hachyderm.io avatar

    @SecurityWriter All my petrol/diesel cars were very budget ones, so putting in more expensive fuel would have been counterproductive 😅 TBH, first time I'm seeing PS as power measure. I've had 47 kW, then 71 kW, then 103 kW. Now it's electric 168 kW and that hits differently - but no one is trying to sell me premium electricity for it 😉

    @fox It's by now so ingrained in the American vernacular (and pop culture, including movies) that it is possibly only noticeable to outsiders.

    The Brits, however, especially Northerners, are likely to address an all-male group by "hey ladies!".

    Do you ever think about abandoned tech trees? Like how no one is working to design better drafting compasses or vellum? No one is perfecting vacuum tubes. No one is laser focused on methods to speed paint and accurate portrait by hand to send out for marriage proposals.

    Technological leaps make entire areas of research pointless— but

    What if just a bit further down the line on the old tech tree there was some bigger breakthrough we’ll never see? I think about this A LOT.

    Someone asked me how much it costs to charge our (Hyundai ). 🤔

    I just did some basic calculation today.

    After 4 months, we drove it for 3,431.5 km.
    3431.5 km x 14 kWh/100km = 481.41 kWh

    Energy rate from BCHydro: 9.75¢/kWh for the first 1350 kWh, and 14.08¢/ kWh after that.

    Assuming the higher rate:
    481.41 kwh x 14.08 ¢/kWh = 6778.25¢ = 67$ (CAD)

    Comparing if we still drove our RAV4:
    3431.5 km x 9.5 L/100 km x 2$/L = 651$ (CAD)

    skolima,
    @skolima@hachyderm.io avatar

    @mariatta Those are some really good numbers!

    After first 4 weeks with my (sibling model to yours), I've already got 3976 km. However, that's mostly motorway, long distance, so largely quick chargers. 848 kWh (measured by chargers) gives an average consumption of 21.75 kWh/100km. Total cost (home plus fast chargers) 1455 PLN, which would be 452 CAD. Cheaper than an ICE, but not by much.

    However, it's much more comfortable.

    What apps are you using to access Mastodon? Are they free? And would you recommend them to others?
