Random SF-biology idea:

You know about carcinization, and how there's no such thing as trees, and how mammalian predators seem to evolve into mustelids all the time: but WHAT IF due to some inexplicable evolutionary reverse ferret, mustelidization turns out to be just an intermediate station on the road to platypusification?

The future is monotremes!

Do brytyjskiego paszportu.

The classified papers, seen by the FT, describe a threshold for using tactical nuclear weapons that is lower than Russia has ever publicly admitted, according to experts who reviewed and verified the documents.

@MennoOng @cstross funny enough, the fuel consumption on those two is the same.

And perhaps not so funny, Countryman is only a few cm larger than the modern Golf. It's definitely not a big car by modern standards. Heck I don't **fit **in the current Mini (haven't tried the Countryman). I can't imagine squeezing into the original.

@cstross @MennoOng I mean, as a kid in Poland, I've been driven in Fiat 126p. There were no other cars. Trying to get into it as an adult though, not so much. And the crumple zone, well. There's an old joke: in German cars the crumple zone ends at the engine. In Fiat 126p, too.

(It's a rear engined car)

Tried recently: I don't fit into a modern Fiat 500 or the Mini Cooper. Toyota Yaris is fine, though.

@Migueldeicaza @ahornby I do enjoy this as a very contrarian look at government spending, but I am aware why it terrifies many economists: they immediately see runaway spending, currency crashing, country with huge foreign debt (that can't be simply abolished or the country would find itself cut away from all international markets).

I don't think there's a single example of a modern world country trying this approach and succeeding, is there?

skolima,
@skolima@hachyderm.io avatar

@Migueldeicaza @ahornby Yeah, fair. But the stakes are incredibly high for trying out anything that's even slightly beyond dogma. And I don't really see how it could be tried out "a bit" or in a controlled manner. A revolutionary government might try it, but, well, that's a whole other kettle of fish, as they say.

It makes sense in philosophical terms, in the sense of what money is. It's also not how most politicians think about money and that feels like a huge barrier.

Spent the war using a duplicate of his brother's documents (brother didn't make it - died near the end of the war, from getting injured while poaching).

This was an unbelievable family story until a few years ago a documentary film crew showed up, asking if we have any photos of him.

Why there’s a required gap separating wind turbines? Ayrshire, Scotland, 28 December 2023 during storm Gerrit a wind turbine lost its wings as result of overspeeding during strong wind. The debris was flying at hundreds of meters.

Source: https://www.energyvoice.com/renewables-energy-transition/wind/uk-wind/544496/ayrshire-wind-turbine-sheds-blades-in-storm-gerrit-gales/

Last year there was a similar case in South Wales and it came out that wind turbine needs electricity to turn its wings into a neutral position. If power is cut off, the turbine is unable to go neutral and this may result in such overspeeding and ultimately breaking the wings by inertial force or, as it happened in South Wales, collapsing of the tower.

I'm looking for owners. Yesterday announced a push to get everyone into EVs by 2025, one point stating that the price difference EV and a gas powered was a few thousand dollars difference, is that really the case? I'm comparing the price of common cars like Honda Civics and Hyundai IONIQ and the MSRP is nearly 20K difference. I know gas savings and maintenance costs are lower, but not 20K, what am I missing from an affordability aspect. I ask this as someone who'd love an EV.

skolima,
@skolima@hachyderm.io avatar

@ericboots There's a gap: there's almost no class B/C non-SUV electric models available. There's plenty of C and D SUVs and in that range the prices are getting somewhat close. But for smaller cars, there's some models planned for Q1 2024. It's been a slow start.

So right now there's no equivalent of en electric Civic.
