"Doug Rushkoff is ready to renounce the digital revolution"

From HN top-level comment:

"No real surprise. A good number of people who have grown up with the promise of the tech are pretty well disgusted by what it's turned out to deliver, which is mostly "A handful of multibillionaires treating the rest of us as sets of eyeballs to be monetized at all possible costs."

Regarding opening signups, one person on HN comments:

> The account portability is probably the biggest problem with the right now.

And while that may be true from an end-user perspective, imho it is not the biggest problem. The fact that for a new dev building an app is like a Viking trying to discover America is problematic. While has the Holland-America line where you can check in for the ride.

Beware that is fiddling with archiving public (world-readable) chatrooms and publishing that in a searchable manner at https://archive.matrix.org

This already happened, while opt-out is still being discussed. Bad.

The bot that does this is:

Doomscrolling is real. There's.. a lot to report on. Both the awareness-raising and continuous exposure to gloom are thoroughly depressing. It is nonetheless needed.. to an extent. Too much exposure stifles people into inaction and turning away.

Solution focus is much rarer. Or it is just that good news doesn't sell. It is an uplifting passtime. I like to be in a spirit of "realistic optimism" or "optimistic realism" better than being a doom prophet.

@Jermolene hi Jeremy 👋 saw your follow. Nice to e-acquaint :)

I once had this discussion on an - for me - ideal mix of wiki technology and social web. And then took notes into an idea at Social Coding Movement to patiently wait for its time to come. Maybe it interests you in context of ..

It is called : Social Knowledge Fabrics

@protonmail one big improvement to your mail app would be that when someone mails you with one of your alias addresses and you reply, that it doesn't default to your personal address, but still use the same alias. Now we've given away a personal address reserved for other uses. Also in contacts list you should be able to specify the preferred alias to use when sending mail to that contact.

TIL about licensing..

https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Copyfarleft

Like the Peer Production license:

> "The peer production license is an example of the Copyfair type of license, in which only other commoners, cooperatives and nonprofits can share and re-use the material, but not commercial entities intent on making profit through the commons without explicit reciprocity."

I filed a named "Community has no Boundary".

The idea is to define a standardized vocabulary extension for "Community", based on as:Group where the members (as:Actor) have a collection of as:Relationship to other actors.

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fediverse-ideas/issues/47

Both custom + standard relationships supported e.g. http://purl.org/vocab/relationship

Native community support on the would allow us to move away from the technnical notion of "instances", talk about instead.

Meredith Whittaker president of @signalapp on #Xitter announces #Signal will leave #EU market if #ChatControl regulation by @EUCommission comes into effect.

MEP @echo_pbreyer for a long time is raising awareness of the pervasive #privacy-eroding nature of this regulation, which won't have its intended effect of protecting children.

#EUCommission is like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in how good regulation is followed by dystopic stuff, eroding trust.

> "Why don’t children leave the house?". Because of screens.

(Quoted from HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38370203 )

I'm probably old-fashioned, but it saddens me a great deal to see how many children are so highly addicted and always glued to their device, that the world outside hardly arouses any interest to them.

I know extreme cases. Children to whom a bright sunny day is near meaningless, nature is unattractive, vacation is a nuisance because one is supposed to do other stuff than stare at a screen.

The "Read more" feature in web UI to cut off long posts leads to a great deal of unnecessary network traffic, and waste of energy.

I read a thread, then see a comment with a "read more". So I click that post. Now the whole thread is refetched with focus on that comment. After reading I click the top post again, as I want a view of the whole thread. Everything refetched again, and I continue reading, until the next "read more" comment is bumped into.

Hi @liaizon

I see you don't have a Social Coding movement account. I just posted a thought on moving delightful-funding under the Fediverse Futures org on codeberg, and into maintainership of our team.

Why is it so hard in and with to show thumbnails of the screenshots I made, so I know which image to select without painstakingly opening them one by one from separate file window?

There's many images in my screenshot dir, all having thumbnails, except those created in the last 5 days. Why no thumbnails here? Why?
