Should be a fun read. Book by Kelly and @ZachWeinersmith

"Blending in history, law, and psychology alongside the hard sciences, the book gives a frank and honest summary of the field. It could have been the research notes for an Ursula K. Le Guin, or a James S. A. Corey story, except that it’s filled with jokes, palette cleansing anecdotes and charming cartoon illustrations."

I mean it's nice & cute that they are so amazed we are so modern, green and developed, but after a while I wonder if people are actually exaggerating for clicks.

yeah, I'm cynical lol

I remember back in the olden days, when building the Linux kernel we ran make config and went through all the questions, answering yes/no on each one depending on how you wanted to have your kernel configured. Then we ran make to build it.

At some point, when the number of options had grown to make this a bit of a hassle, make menuconfig and make xconfig were introduced, making the process a bit faster.

I haven't built a kernel in a long time (decades?) and I wonder if make config still exists, and if so, how many questions do you have to answer if you were to use it?

sohkamyung,
@sohkamyung@mstdn.io avatar

@loke I recall doing make config in the old days when I needed to build and include a graphics driver in a linux kernel: I think it was in the days before kernel loadable modules.

Haven't touched the linux config system in many years, but I now find myself using menuconfig again, but not in the context of the linux kernel. Espressif's ESP-IDF system uses menuconfig to build applications for the ESP32 MCUs.

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved transit, not only did it transform the city’s public life & economic success, but the traffic got better.

The traffic got BETTER.

@BrentToderian A search got me this paywalled research article about the effects of removing the highway.

"Whereas travel speed declined and traffic volume increased immediately after the construction work, the number of subway passengers increased and the number of road trips decreased simultaneously. This implies that travelers change their behavior patterns and are self-compliant, even in response to major travel disturbances."

How to make Singapore / Malaysia-style soft-boiled eggs for breakfast:

  • Bring pot of water to a rolling boil
  • Turn off the heat
  • Take eggs out from fridge, drop them gently into the pot
  • Cover
  • Let it steep in this hot water for 6-7 min (small/medium eggs straight from the fridge), 8-11 min for large eggs
  • Crack into bowl, add white pepper and light soy sauce

It's supposed to be v runny. Add a min if you don't like runny eggs; reduce a min if eggs are room temp

sohkamyung,
@sohkamyung@mstdn.io avatar

@skinnylatte I remember buying a 'gadget' to make soft boiled eggs in Singapore.

It's basically a container with a hole at the bottom. You put in eggs, pour boiling water and by the time the water drains out, the eggs are soft boiled.

I may have a picture of it somewhere...
