The Google Chrome team rejected JPEG XL image support, but the next Safari adds it. Along with, somewhat surprisingly given patent constraints, HEIC. Perhaps easier for Apple since they build support into the OS so no extra licensing hurdles.

Tempting, but not so tempting that I'm going to do it.

Bewick's wren today on Devil's Slide south of San Francisco. He was singing a lot. Wrens have the best song/weight ratio.

Just ponied up $30 for @mimestream. It's the Gmail software I didn't know I wanted. Fast and works like Gmail, not like most third-party email apps that only work generically. E.g. seamlessly handles with Gmail signature, categories, and keyboard shortcuts. https://mimestream.com/

@albertkinng @mimestream Yes, well, developers like to have a way to support continued development, so here we are. You could pay $30 for the first year and then cancel, of course, but we all know what happens with subscriptions once you sign up.

@albertkinng @mimestream It might not be that the sentiment is universal. :) Seems to be increasingly common, though, in part since many of us ingest software as a service.

Google's Bard, sadly but perhaps not surprisingly, doesn't know there's a difference between dog vomit slime mold (Fuligo septica) and dog sick slime mold (Didymium mucilago).

Musk talks up the Twitter innovation rate, but unlike those changes, this Bluesky feature is one I'm really interested in. And it's an advantage over Mastodon. Chronological sorting is OK in some situations, but more sophisticated algorithms are important at least for my usage.

Bluesky custom feed description: "Now you can choose what algorithm powers your social media experience."

stshank,
@stshank@mstdn.social avatar

@henrik @rolle I thought I read somewhere that Bluesky's feeds are open source, but not sure about that. (One's ability to understand source code is still a limiting factor, of course.) Developers can write your own custom feeds, too. Starter kit: https://github.com/bluesky-social/feed-generator

It took me 20 seconds to plop a hippopotamus next to the Golden Gate Bridge. Adobe has built its Firefly generative AI tool straight into Photoshop, and it's a big deal. The beta is out today.

@mattblaze Yes, I'm exhausted trying to reproduce my contact circles elsewhere. Activation energy is high for social media. LinkedIn is much more useful to me nowadays, too, so that's a whole nother lift.
