Twitter refugee & loving the Fediverse

Semi-retired in Tulsa, OK. I’ve been a mathematician, a geologist, a computer geek, a teacher, a caregiver, an artist and I still manage a little website business at www.zenlady.com. Currently enjoy volunteering at Tulsa Zoo and taking photos of nature and critters of all sorts.

Profile picture shows me with tiger Ava (we are separated by a thick pane of glass).

I'm ready for twitter (now X) to die. It serves no purpose now other than for trolls, neo-nazis, etc.

Bigger vehicles can be safer in crashes, but far more dangerous for pedestrians.

And the average size of cars and trucks in the U.S. continues to grow. Some current models – like that of the Toyota Rav4 – are a third larger than they were only 15 years ago.

That’s led to a 77% increase in pedestrian fatalities since 2010.

My husband has started to refer to these big vehicles as mega trucks - reminiscent of the megafauna of the pleistocene that went extinct & hoping these mega trucks will also go extinct!

EG.5, like the other strains that have gained dominance in the U.S. over the last year-plus, is a subvariant of omicron. The WHO has categorized it as a variant under monitoring, which is a step below variants of interest or concern. https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/eg5-coronavirus-variant-dominant-symptoms-spread-rcna98768

I didn't mask much on vacation. We were out hiking most of the time but we did eat in restaurants. I've been feeling a bit under the weather since we got home but I think it's the heat. I have used home covid tests twice since we got home, but both tests are negative. I've read it can take 5 days after exposure to test positive though.

While we were dipping our feet in Waterton Lake, the mule deer consider the Peace Park their home. Several wandered through the park and also dipped their feet into the lake, totally unconcerned about the people all about.

TIL that there are a lot of English words that have been borrowed into German. Especially in advertising and product names, it seems. The transition is not always a smooth one, however.

Today a friend asked me what was up with vaccines. Why haven't we been encouraged to get further boosters?

The short answer is that there's a new version coming this fall that targets the now-prevalent XBB.1.5 strain that was not included in previous formulations.

My guess is that this will be made available, but not necessarily recommended, to all US adults. I will be getting it if it is available to me.

As someone over 65, I was able to get a second dose of the bivalent vaccine this spring since the vaccines are only good for about 6 months.

3 people have acquired malaria in the US. They’re the first in 20 years.

The cases, identified in Florida and Texas, raise a lot of questions.

breadandcircuses, to climate

Considering what we know about the real and immediate dangers of climate change, how can nearly everyone just carry on with business as usual?

I'd argue there are three reasons:

#1. The majority of Earth's human inhabitants are so busy trying to keep themselves and their family members alive (housed, fed, safe) that they have literally no time to learn about or be interested in climate change.

#2. The small minority (10%?) of humans who have had the privilege of education, who have the luxury of time, and who feel motivated to care about climate change can in fact do very little about it themselves. Sure, they can buy an EV, ride a bike, or go vegan, but none of that will really make much of a dent because of...

#3. The owners and managers of our society — the governments, industries, billionaire business owners, and major media — all of whom have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, in keeping the stores open, the factories running, the airliners flying, and the cruise ships sailing. The longer our rulers can keep assuring everyone that business-as-usual is just fine, the more money they will make. And they believe (though it's likely a delusion) that with enough money and enough power, they and their descendants will be able to survive and even thrive in the 3°C to 5°C world of the future.

Hi to all!

I’m an artist that decided to jump back into traditional mediums from digital the past few years and experiment. I’m always trying to learn.

Lately I’ve been working in oil pastels which have been a blast as it allows me to paint at the kitchen table after a long day of work and parenthood without much set up or clean up.

I live in the and enjoy , , science fiction/fantasy, and also naps. Be sure to say hi if you got this far.
