Unheard of! Disgraceful discrimination of the most productive members of society! Pure socialism, plain and simple! This could have been any one of us owners of >75m superyachts!

> A superyacht owned by Bernard Arnault – the world’s second-richest man – has been banned from docking in Naples owing to a new regulation that has left multibillionaires “thoroughly disappointed” about missing out on staying at the southern Italian city.

What troubles me still, a year and some after finishing “The Ministry For The Future,” is that this kind of just-so handwaving on Stan’s part was taken seriously – remains, if anything, the current gold standard for thinking through the contours of our crisis in speculative or imaginative form. But it’s ducking every question that matters, every last one.

If Facebook and Instagram were to join the Fediverse and you could follow users from that world from your instance, would you do it?

Boosts appreciated. I'd like to know the current consensus of the Fediverse.

I've never heard of a company who can work in a building they don't own or pay rent for. This is bizarre.

Elon Musk told a Twitter advisor at 4 a.m. that the company would only pay rent over his 'dead body,' lawsuit says https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter-lawsuit-he-never-planned-to-pay-rent-2023-5

@rolle @WTL
I’m kind of curious how they justify it to themselves. That is, do they have some justification that makes them feel like they’re morally in the right, or is it just a crass “I can get by with this so I will.”

Huh I see there's an option to "Block direct messages from people you don't follow" which would save me the spam, buuuut would a normal friendly person know why their DM hadn't got a reply?

I'm thankfully not having to fend off a bunch of unwanted messages, so actually I'd rather people weren't ghosted by me without understanding why. But it'd also be nice to throw the switch to kill off spam DMs...

tkinias,

Did you find out what a blocked sender sees? I also would not want a well-intentioned stranger to get just ghosted without my knowing...

Twitter somehow gets worse week by week--right now it is an unusable swamp of right wing conspiracy theory, wave after wave of racism (there is currently an "invasion" underway at the southern border that must be stopped by lethal force) crypto bros, and bots selling high-follower accounts. Amazing really.

tkinias,
@tkinias@historians.social avatar

@GWillow
this is intriguing to me, as “well-regulated Town Square” (referred to in the screencap downthread) to me implies a public service, not a privatized commons like Bluesky—wouldn’t socialists and leftists generally prefer a nonprofit collective or co-op over a capitalist project, even if their first choice would be a public enterprise?

RIP Metaverse
An obituary for the latest fad to join the tech graveyard
https://www.businessinsider.com/metaverse-dead-obituary-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-tech-fad-ai-chatgpt-2023-5

> Zuckerberg declared in a March update that Meta's "single largest investment is advancing AI and building it into every one of our products." Meta's chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, told CNBC in April that he, along with Mark Zuckerberg and the company's chief product officer, Chris Cox, were now spending most of their time on AI.

Imagine my face when I learned in my 20s, as I heard more from people in other countries, that other places had free school lunches and the German system where lunch would cost about 2€ per day (in today’s €, adjusted for inflation) was just another neo-liberal hellscape.

tkinias,
@tkinias@historians.social avatar

@esther
my memory of state schools in the US (late 1980s) was that we had punch cards or something like that – I definitely remember that if you didn’t have your card you didn’t get lunch

by high school it was all à la carte and on a cash basis rather than being a prepaid fixed menu—but at least back then it was still being operated by the school itself instead of being contracted out to a for-profit company

I'm so my autie 'special interest' is affected by hyperfocusing on not getting things done in a very thorough way.

    I find it intriguing that in English we have four words that literally mean more or less the same thing: extraordinary, outstanding, egregious, and abnormal, all basically meaning “different from the usual” but two are nearly always positive and two are uniformly negative.
