I miss having to defrag drives. There was something therapeutic about watching it.

It's my obligatory "please buy my new game" post!

Liberation is a retro space adventure inspired by the original BBC Micro Elite and classic UK sci-fi such as Blake's 7, Space:1999, Quatermass, Metal Mickey-- ah too many to list! (I post about them a lot-- follow and we can talk )

It's my first "mastodon era" game, developed entirely since I've been on gamedev.place (thanks!). Made on Linux with Godot. I'd love to make more!

Is this an amiga ball easter egg in Babylon 5?

It's on a printed backdrop behind a cafe. Normally it doesn't get seen from this angle (because the vista requires a forced perspective to work) but in "The Fall of the Night" the camera is awkwardly placed and this checkerboard ball is visible. It looks a lot like the boing ball to me!

Babylon 5 famously used Amiga products to make the cgi... so I want to believe...

My old BBS game from 1995 that I found this week was written in Turbo Pascal. I have no recollection of this. I am updating my CV to "proficient".

The "xz backdoor" hack unfolding in the linux world tonight is SO EFFING interesting. Obviously the full facts are unknown but on the surface it looks like a beautiful piece of bastardry. A multi-year long con of code commits with multiple levels of social engineering attacks

upmultimedia,
@upmultimedia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

If I'm understanding it correctly, one thing they did was put in a valid new feature that caused false positives with one of the security checks and used that to get approval through to disable the check (with the beautifully anodyne header "disable ifunc to fix Issue")

And their bug reports to speed up adoption are masterclasses in social engineering. Check out the language used in this request to ubuntu: it's a bugfix only, just a translation fix, has no impact, etc

As a linux/foss/html person, flash was the bane of my existence but it goes largely unremarked how Adobe had the internet in their control and then let it go without a fight?!?

Maybe the biggest fumble in internet history

Australia Day. Annually 26 Jan. Stay with me

Celebrates the First Fleet convict ships that formed first colony

Sydney-centric. Highly contested. Equally called Invasion Day or Survival Day. People like a public holiday regardless of politics. Many BBQs

Government youth radio runs annual "Hottest 100" of top songs voted by listeners. energy but good BBQ fodder

Most importantly has given rise to popular annual "Coldest 100" by OzKitsch on twitter celebrating worst of Australia

For All Mankind is maybe the kookiest scifi show ever made.

It's so deliberately absurd (as in the actual art movement Absurdism) I love it. Rockets! Mars! The USSR! Alt-history! Characters are now President, now on the Moon, now running a bar!

I love they don't even bother to age the actors really (50 years is just a bit of gray powder at the temples and call it a day). Kooky!

How are people doing grass in game engines these days? Not long Zelda-style grass but lawns, sports fields and other short and neat grassy areas? I use but I'm 99% sure any technique from or would probably transfer.

I googled "mario run animation frame sheet" to see how the masters did their run cycle and this was the top response on google. Completely polluted. Completely unusable. This could genuinely be a problem.

You know what was a super sexy ship? The Soviet's Mars-94 from that one episode of For All Mankind (season 3 I think). Love the homage to the flared engines of the classic Soyuz rocket

A genuinely valuable collectible is to be one of the first 10 reviews of an indie game on Steam (it's a special threshold for visibility).

Permanently time stamped, verified and on display on one of the largest websites on Earth.

Better than an NFT or steam achievement!

I would love* it if we started discovering hundreds of rocky earth-like exoplanets with our fancy space telescopes but every single one was 450C due to a run away greenhouse effect

LOVE this TASTY shot from The Fury (1978), the other supernatural horror film Brian De Palma did after megahit Carrie.

A psychic accidently touches the bad guy and witnesses them mistreating someone. The editing, the sound, the 360 pan around the actor ... delicious

Warning contains some fake looking 1970s film blood

If you are a game dev I heartily recommend finding someone further along in their career and hitting them up for coffee and a chat, maybe regularly. Call it mentoring or networking or whatever but an hour of chat with someone who has been through what you've been through or can give advice and perspective is worth a month of coding

I envy the people of the 1970s for their perfectly preserved civilisation in the geological record. A thin layer of pristine styrofoam on a layer of lead from petrol exhaust on a layer of illegally dumped asbestos, easily dated due to all the nuclear weapon testing.

What about our generation with its paper straws and spotify playlists and fast fashion?!? Nothing to show in the fossil record except our beautifully preserved corpses made of micro plastics.

I made a whole point and click/exploration game using completely unmodified Renpy :D (and I do some crazy things towards the end!)

You can check out the game here ⛏

I hope to make the engine generic enough someday so that I can share it with people!

Screen recording of a first person game going going from screen to screen in a world with acid colors. The player enter a cave and got interrupted by an angry worm

The Concorde suffered only one "hull loss" in its 27 years of commercial passenger service which is three decades of service with no deaths.

However there were only 14 built and so after one crash it had an 11.36% fatal crash per million departures rate, the worst rate of any aircraft in the modern air industry.

Would you say the Concorde was a safe plane?

upmultimedia,
@upmultimedia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

If anyone ever flew on a concorde I'd love to hear your experience (loud and cramped?)
