No, you can't license my cat picture to Elon, Jack and Mark.

When you post on , or you agree to grant them a very broad perpetual license to the content, including the right to sublicense. On Mastodon, most instances do not take a license. Any bridge that takes content from Mastodon and, without permission, puts that content on one of these platforms is violating that user's to the content. You can not content which you do not own.

@ncrav @mastodonmigration Fun how all threads on this kind of topic tend to devolve into loud arguments about US law, which is of little relevance to 96% of the world.

Probably unpopular point of view: I hate the phrase “science communicator” & always have. We don’t have history or policy communicators - just historians and policy experts who can share their subject. Saying science needs a “communicator” just serves to isolate it as a weird hard thing that needs special magic powers to access. It implies that communication isn’t a normal part of science, but it is (or should be). Also, it undervalues teachers, who communicate science all the time.

@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@helenczerski I was about to disagree with you after reading the first two sentences, but I agree very much with your reasons that follow.

Communicating science is important, and I fully agree that it should be a part of science itself.

which one are you?

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@nixCraft I was using Chrome and Firefox, but I removed Chrome from all my devices a little while back, so Firefox is my main one. 🦊

I also have Chromium and Vivaldi installed.

Argh. Someone posted a screenshot of a really interesting comment, but the screenshot was black with white text. Because I really wanted to read it, I did but now I have flashing artefacts in front of my eyes, even though some time has passed.

I know this is like trying to stop a waterfall with a spoon, but if you want to make things easier for people with non-perfect vision, please consider posting text with white background.

I wish there was a way to show people with fully functioning eyes what people like (with strong astigmatism and old eyes) actually see. That may change their minds.

@dgold @loke The wider availability of dark mode has been an amazing accessibility boost for me (I have keratoconus). But the point remains that it must be optional whenever possible, because people have issues either way.

Why the metric system? Because descriptions like this make no sense, IMHO:

“In all, 3m acre-feet of water is expected to be conserved over the next three years – an acre-foot is 326,000 gallons, or enough water to cover an acre of land, about the size of a football field, one foot deep. A single acre-foot is enough to sustain two average California households for a year.”

@jwildeboer I'm left wondering how many feet an acre has ... 🤨

Question for developers releasing on Windows.

Is there an affordable way to sign installers for Windows for an open source project?

The code signing certificates I've seen all cost significantly more than the rate of donations to my project, but the friction unsigned installers cause is significant for the users.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@Paxxi @sol_hsa Ah, good. I found different information elsewhere on their site. 🤨

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@Paxxi Pyinstaller is not an option, but I'll look for something suitable. I would prefer to just run Python code without the packaging-into-exe.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@Paxxi @sol_hsa You don't need a certificate? My impression from the documentation (which as usual for Microsoft are really hard to follow) a certificate is needed.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@Paxxi Now the question is if I can figure out how to package a Python application as MSIX or APPX.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@Paxxi As for the Microsoft Store, I decided to give it a go. There was a modest one time fee for the developer account registration (110 NOK + tax), which I suspect is as much about verifying identity as anything else.

In any case, the app is submitted 😊

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@Paxxi Anyway, so you work on Kodi. That's a pretty great project. I used it for many years! 😊

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@sol_hsa Yeah, that has generally been my approach too, at least for non-Linux platforms, but then I get stuff like this: https://github.com/vkbo/novelWriter/issues/1449

@konstantin Yeah, Estonia. But Finland was really the worthy winner in the end even if they were far down my list. The juries always take a lot of the fun out of the whole thing. Just let the people vote!

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@konstantin Some years I just stop watching when they start taking the jury votes, because they're always so out of touch. It makes the show better 😁

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@konstantin Well, they certainly don't value originality, that's for sure.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@konstantin Heh, now that the detailed data is out, looking at the 12 pointers: Sweden got 15 from the juries and 0 from the public. Finland got 2 from the juries and 18 from the public. The verdict is pretty clear!

@solely

Not sure why this is surprising to anyone, these tools are trained on existing writing on the internet.

Most of the progress for women in Western societies has been in the last 100 years or so, and even in 2023 there's places where a woman can't work, drive a car or even walk on the street freely.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@XaiaX That's more of a semantic debate, or debate over definitions. I'd argue that there is bias in the entire chain: in the algorithms (written by people), the model (generated from biased data selected by people), and the data itself (created by people).

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@marcolgato @solely

Not sure why you think people find this surprising.

We've all come to expect this result because these models reflect our sexist society. The takeaway here is that algorithms and models aren't neutral, and thus are perpetuating sexism and other types of bigotry, which is highly problematic.

I don't usually do anything on Constitution Day in Norway. Especially not when I lived in Oslo, because there are just too many people out. But I always watch the broadcast on TV. That usually gets me into the spirit of the day 😄🇧🇻🎉

I've been working on a new tool for my Open Source project @novelwriter This is a Manuscript Build tool that will replace the current tool for assembling all the individual text files into a single manuscript document.

The primary goal has been to replace the limited options panel today with a more flexible tool where you can select what to include at a more fine grained level. It's a common request.

There is still much work left on it, but I've had some good progress.

A short video showing the new manuscript build tool in the application novelWriter.

@masukomi I tried Scrivener once many years ago, but I know very little about it since. They dropped support for Linux, and last I checked, not much was happening for Windows either.

So yeah, I don't know how novelWriter compares to Scrivener. Since novelWriter is open source, I'm also not trying to compete with anyone as it makes little difference to me which one people choose. What matters to me is that my app is useful on its own. 😊

These are the remains of the old farmhouse on our family farm. The buildings were abandoned in 1944, when the new house and barn further down in the valley were ready.

My uncles and aunt, grandad, and many generations before, were born here. My mom was born in the new house.

There isn't much left of the main house, only the walls. But my uncle (89), who was with us on this Sunday walk, showed us where all the rooms used to be. 😊

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

According to my uncle, this end of the house was the bedchamber. Naturally, I assume that the tree here therefore is our family tree. 😁

Also, I keep laughing at the nickname of the AI of the space ship the protagonist is on: "Art" for "Asshole research transport". They don't quite get along 😄
