@tjdraper I still have no idea what to use all this so-called "AI" for. I'm happy to use new things if they are useful. This mostly isn't.

Of course, Machine Learning has been around for quite a while and has a lot of use cases. I have used it successfully to enhance video. But the stuff they're pushing out now is 99% utterly useless and only exists to inflate stock prices because we're in a bubble.

“You can’t stop AI crime and abuse now! The genie is out of the bottle!”

It costs literal billions, a small ocean’s worth of water, and electricity that could power nations to keep that genie out of the bottle. They absolutely do not have to make the abuses this easy or cheap

Here's why ...

I have no idea what the article means by: "The fact that boring-looking Mimas ..."

I just realised every week for the next four weeks will be four day work weeks!

Next week has Labour Day, then there's Ascension Day the week after, then it's Constitution Day in Norway, and finally Whit Monday the fourth week.

May is giving us a taste of the four day work week! 😊

Well, that was a blast from the past!

Just watched the old 80s SciFi movie "Battle Beyond the Stars". I came across it while browsing recommendations on streaming.

There is a SciFi movie I watched on TV as a kid, early 80s, that I've been looking for, and I think this is the one. The listed Norwegian title on IMDB seems to match what I remember too.

It's actually quite enjoyable too. Pretty average overall, but a nice watch for a lazy Saturday. 😊

@olafurw Remember when we talked about Python integers at work back when? Here's a really nice writeup of how they're implemented in the CPython VM.

They are by default bignums, and it takes a minimum of 28 bytes to store an integer on 64-bit platforms. 🤯

It took 18 emails back and forth, over about 4 weeks, to get Microsoft to finally delete my developer account rather than just disable it. They first claimed they could only disable it, and I had to push multiple times, citing GDPR and saying I would report them to the data protection authority, before it was magically possible after all and they did it. 🙄

Over the last three weeks I've been tinkering with adding a footnotes feature to @novelwriter. It was non-trivial, as I had to come up with a syntax for it, make the indexer handle it, and add build support into HTML, markdown and Open Document. The latter took a fair bit of tinkering too.

But it is done, and merged! The final diff was +2,181 −1,338. Quite a lot, although I took the opportunity to clean up and extend some tests. Coverage's now at 99.61% 😁

Funny when you spend a large chunk of your days in a code editor, how you get very attached to your colour theme!

I use "Base16 Tomorrow Night" as my main theme almost everywhere, but various implementations have small differences. I just switched to another extensions for this theme, and now I have to get used to bits of code swapping colour all over again. It's surprisingly distracting.

There are some fun hidden details in Fringe. For instance, in the parallel universe of the series, when the Observers come out of the movie theatre after having watched Back to the Future, Eric Stoltz is listed as the main actor (episode 2x15).

Stoltz was in fact initially cast as Marty McFly, and they recorded several scenes with him before he was replaced by Michael J. Fox. Apparently, that didn't happen in the parallel universe 😁

I've written up my experiment with upscaling Star Trek Deep Space Nine from my DVDs to HD. It's a pretty long post, but I hope it is useful 😊

The 2023 Norwegian local election is over. The Labour party continues its tailspin, and seems as oblivious to why their strategy is failing as ever. As a consequence, the right steams ahead with their project to undermine our key social institutions by turning them into for-profit lesser alternatives.

The Socialist Left is the only party on the left to make any gains, so I'm happy with that at least. We also did well locally in my area, retaining our 2 seats on the council.

Looks like we're in for an era of bloatware on phones mostly there for the manufacturers to inflate their stock prices. It will certainly encourage me to hang on to my current phone for longer.

It's been quite stormy here for the last day or so, and apparently three cows decided to take the bus home last night rather than walk in the rain. 😁

Apparently, they had escaped in the bad weather, but the owner got them all home safe.

I had a great balcony for low effort astrophotography back when I lived outside Geneva. The summer of 2019 was particularly good, and both Jupiter and Saturn were visible every night. I got some great shots of Jupiter with its moons, like this one here.

These are single shots with a 135mm lens and 500ms exposure. I got inspired by a friend that did proper astrophotography with tracking and stacking and all, which sounded like a lot of fun!

@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

If a human is exposed to raw space vacuum, they will not freeze any time soon. Vacuum is an excellent insulator, because there is no matter that can transport away your heat (convection), like in an atmosphere or liquid. Managing heat is actually a problem in space, especially with sunlight.

Rapid evaporation may cause cooling in certain parts of the body though.

Latest episode of Star Trek: SNW got this wrong, so has a lot of other shows, movies and books in the past.

Got my new monitor set up and mounted on an arm rather than the default stand. I'm running Debian on the PC, and this is my workspace for working on my open source project. It first really nice!

I work remotely, so I really needed this for my work setup. The monitor has a built-in KVM switch, so when I switch to the laptop for work, so does the mouse, keyboard and webcam.
