I'm supposed to be something of an expert on this stuff, but despite thinking that I knew EVERYTHING there was to know about the Roger Corman film "Battle Beyond the Stars", I discovered today that I missed something.

This 1980 film is great fun, with a wonderful early James Horner score.

It is essentially a space remake of "The Magnificent Seven" (1960), which itself is a western remake of "The Seven Samurai" (1954). Battle even co-stars Robert Vaughn who played a similar role in Magnificent!

But here's what I missed. The peaceful planet under attack is called Akir. OK, fine. And (you idiot, Lauren, how did you miss this reference all these years?) the director of Seven of course was Akira Kurosawa! ARRGGH!

Jeez Bob, out of touch much? The only technology creatives are against, is the kind that is strip mining their creativity and not paying them for it.

Instead of helping people be better at their creative jobs, you just wanted to replace them. And see how that's working for you?

There is a special weirdness in providing verification of your Professional Status for Comic-Con badges.

It's a good problem to have. But it's also funny linking to yourself in promotional videos to prove you are who you are.

I am incredibly grateful to have a dream job; working in a universe I've loved since I was a child, and never imagined I'd have the chance to.

And certainly not for the show itself. I take the part where I know most people don't get to do that, very seriously.

Even the terrible days are pretty amazing, when I survive them :)

I just imposed a series of tariffs on goods made in China:

25% on steel and aluminum,
50% on semiconductors,
100% on EVs,
And 50% on solar panels.

China is determined to dominate these industries.

I'm determined to ensure America leads the world in them.

Boeing’s Starliner crewed mission was postponed shortly before launch on Monday because of a last-minute issue that cropped up with a valve on the spacecraft’s rocket. Turns out the spacecraft was made by Boeing, which is concerning because recently Boeing makes things that fall apart easily.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@Sonikku @davidaugust @lisamelton I mean, if you ignore it's 50% owned by Boeing and half it's board of directors are from Boeing and it was created so Boeing could get back into the launch business after being blacklisted by the Air Force since they stole docs from Lockheed. Sure.

Seattle Times has a new report on how Boeing's current challenges can be traced to prioritizing shareholders over everything for 25 years, slashing costs and outsourcing key work, weakening unions, and pressuring suppliers, leading to loss of its core competency.

This is a great example of how the stock market rewards short term thinking leading to companies sabotaging themselves. Intel is in the same boat.

This sounds like a terrible idea, just designed to pay less staff. I hate the theater of screenings, but I trust a person to look at me and pass me along more than code.

Tech can't make self-checkout work consistently without choking, now imaging that with 100s of people in a line for something actually important.

Needing the Mac version of Keynote to re-set a fricking video thumbnail is annoying....

Especially when you discover that after you've finished the presentation. I don't want to remake it in Powerpoint just for that one bit of cleanup.

Can't be more clear that "No Labels" is a conservative op against Biden. Even CNN is starting to get it.

"No Labels officials – who have repeatedly said they don’t want to become a spoiler that would result in Donald Trump going back to the White House – have urged prospective candidates and others to prioritize accusing Biden of having politically toxic positions he does not actually hold."

Don't fall for that shit.

If you dump a creative work like this for taxes, the work should get released into the public domain.

Remember the reduction of shows and movies were going to happen anyway, since studios were spending like drunken sailors on projects they mismanaged long before these strikes.

People blaming this on new WGA or SAG rates should be given the side-eye. Many will use this as an excuse, just like the companies that raised prices during the pandemic because they could, not needed to.

Heck, finish in 1 really unless you're a crazy success.
