Even though only has about 1/1000 the mass of the Sun, it stores the majority of the angular momentum in our solar system. Not only that, but the entire dang planet, ~11 times the radius of Earth, whips around once every ~9.8 hours.

The effects of tides and Coriolis forces must be impressive. I wonder what it would be like to fly through the surface cloud layers in person.

between codeberg, sourcehut, and disroot, and ecosystem of stuff-that-isn't-github is just so good. different service providers fitting different niches, all backed by some good software and lovely people. i hope they're all able to keep it up!!!

zrb,

@jacqueline I was interested in trying out , but after a good two hours reading docs and trying to figure out their decentralization model I'm just more confused than when I started. Plus, call it superstitious, but any project that embraces .eth is a project I'm fine staying away from.

I'll just self-host and call it a day. Figuring out how git-email works will be my next project.

I just tried to sync a with an mp3 player from a Mac and was utterly defeated. This used to be so easy!

gPodder seems to be recommended by internet forums, but I couldn't get it to sync.

@jacqueline do you have any ideas for how we might sync podcasts to a from macOS? (I'm not asking you to support the crappy $6 mp3 player I'm messing with now, but I don't have a Tangara to play with yet.)

zrb,
@zrb@astrodon.social avatar

@jacqueline @skyfaller @hailey Along those lines, how difficult would it be to sync progress of podcasts / audiobooks with a server running ?

I understand that the point of is to be an offline device, but keeping listening sessions sync'ed with the server would be very convenient!

(would I need to learn C++ to implement that? I'm more of a 🦀 person myself but I could certainly try!)

Do NOT trust this new startup company promising to deliver a new Linux-based handheld device. They have funding from blockchain companies, they promise way too much, their goals are high, and some of the promises can't even be delivered. How do they plan on allowing players to play Fortnite? What does an 'immutable distro' have to do with hackers? So many questions...

If I didn't know any better, this could be a scam or something that will leave the limelight soon enough and the people will run off with the $10 million they secured in funding.

"our anti cheat system. We are planning to generate signatures for each version of our OS"

so if I'm understanding this correctly, the intention is in fact a locked down OS. Will you not even be able to install your own programs if that makes the system-level signature different, lest it could possibly be cheating software?

I haven't used an immutable distro, so perhaps these problems have solutions. These marketing claims just feel a bit disingenuous to me.

"Parts of High Plains Aquifer, including the well-known Ogallala aquifer, have a point of no return — some farms and communities have already crossed it — and the damages that ensue can come with little warning.

[...]

The trouble is not limited to Kansas, experts say. There are thin spots on the aquifer all across the plains, particularly in states south of Nebraska, at risk of the same water crisis."

People's failure to understand that fascism is a fairly banal worldview reflects a refusal to understand how common and ordinary looking it is and how well it hides behind our modern high tech lifestyles.

Fascism doesn't have to have 1930s pomposity and daily military parades.

It can look like America, right now, today, depending on who and where you are. America already has military jingoism, mass incarceration, mass surveillance, unchecked paramilitaries, and theocrats denying our rights.

zrb,
@zrb@astrodon.social avatar

@gwynnion the most infuriating dismissal: “calling everything you don’t like ‘fascism’ isn’t an argument”. The most striking (and terrifying) realization I had when reading about pre-Nazi Germany was the eerie familiarity of their political situation to today.

Politics isn’t some abstract thing that happens to other people somewhere far away.

my biggest complaint about AI is we didn’t ask for it. zero popular movements took to the streets to demand AI. no one sat around kitchen tables lamenting how hard life is without AI.

what people want is health care, housing, climate change solutions, etc We sit around kitchen tables wondering how to pay for college, get loved ones the psych and addiction support they need, or help the people on our streets who need homes

@cairobraga @mike805 @seachanger for U.S. taxes, the IRS offers "Free Fillable Forms", an interactive web version of Form 1040 (and supplemental forms) that includes links to explanations and instructions. You can submit these forms to the IRS directly through their provided web site. This is free for all income levels and covers all tax situations.

Many U.S. states also offer similar free-filing services online for their state taxes as well.

zrb,
@zrb@astrodon.social avatar

@cairobraga @mike805 @seachanger However, U.S. tax law is so intentionally esoteric (specifically so that rich people don't have to pay taxes) that many people don't feel confident enough to fill out and submit Form 1040 themselves.

It also doesn't help that tax-preparation services, such as #TurboTax and #HRBlock, spend significant amounts of money to openly #bribe politicians and civil servants in order to keep the tax code complicated.

zrb,
@zrb@astrodon.social avatar

@seachanger @cairobraga @mike805 exactly! I filled out the Free Fillable Forms online and it took me 3 tries submitting it before the system accepted it without errors.

However, I still preferred it over commercial tax software, and it took the same amount of time for me to complete (I went through both methods for comparison).

The electricity and water use required by data centres is becoming cause for concern. Iowa and Ireland are calling for moratoriums on new development projects. Microsoft’s global water consumption grew 34% from 2021 to 2022. And estimates say that around 80% of content in data centres could be stuff we never use again, stored by default to consume energy in perpetuity for no purpose at all.
