This chart shows annual hours of smoke-filled skies in Calgary from 1953 to 2023.

As the first wildfire smoke of the 2024 season blew into the city this week, it's hard to convey the sadness it elicited in a lot of folks here.

There's a growing realization this is our new reality. And a genuine sense of mourning.

@timbray And now U of A.

I particularly like how the Uni Prez keeps citing "Policy and Procedure" like it is Holy Writ. I write P&P professionally: sausage-making has nothin' on it. But evidently "following P&P" is the new version of "just following orders."

The press is always at pains to identify how many protesters/arrestees "aren't students." Those dastardly Outside Agitators are at it again, corrupting and misleading our naive young.

In 1999, hundreds of students set up tents on the University of Calgary campus to protest tuition hikes.

I've found limited info about it online.

Does anyone remember how long it lasted and how it ended?

Poverty Lane' tents rise, U o C tuitions may also Calgary Herald: Friday, March 26, 1999 More than 200 students occupying a tent "shanty town" at the University of Calgary will hit the sidewalks this morning to protest against an anticipated tuition hike. The university administration, in a last-minute move, relocated today's board of governors meeting off campus to nearby McMahon Stadium. The board will make the final decision on tuition fees. In a meeting Thursday, the planning and finance committee recommended a maximum increase this fall, for academic year 1999-2000. It would be the 10th year in a row of tuition hikes. Tent town protesters, who'll march to the board meeting to rally with other students, are "angry, frustrated and disbelieving," said Paul Galbraith, president of the students union. ... The tent town on campus grew to about 65 rainbow-hued tents by late Thursday afternoon, including a subdivision dubbed Poverty Lane. Ricardo Hoar, 19, a second-year computer science student, borrowed a friend's tent to join the protest. A guitar, pillows, books, sleeping bags and carton of strawberries were piled in his temporary abode. His parents told him not to get arrested. Two students union executives bunked in a hut of recycled plywood, its roof shingled with Ichiban noodle soup boxes. On the door, it says: This is not a home - yet.

@robsonfletcher unrelated: I see a MEC snowfield tent in there (yellow and blue dome to the lower right). That’s a great tent and I still have the one my family bought in 1992.

Councillors say colleague Coun. Sean Chu is participating via camera online, but couldn't explain the lack of in-person attendance at Calgary's citywide rezoning public hearing.

roger,

Here's my take on the big rezoning thing:

It's not nearly as impactful as most people on either the for- and against- sides think.

Right now, over 95% of the individual requests to do this sort of rezoning on an individual lot are approved.

This change, if it goes through, will speed things up by a few months in a process that takes a few years.

It's just not that big of a deal for anyone.

Perrin49,
@Perrin49@coales.co avatar

@msh @roger Take a look at the houses that are being replaced now. Smaller homes on large lots being razed to be replaced by behemoth houses. That's not preserving any neighbourhood character.
I am sure there will be some issues, but parking and traffic issues are less important than homelessness.

msh,
@msh@coales.co avatar

@Perrin49 @roger not only that but more and more larger homes end up with boarders in the basement or even illegal suites. The house next door was once rented out to 4 young guys, each with their own vehicle, and it isn't even a big house.

In some neighbourhoods there are lots of larger homes with boarders or extended families with like 8+ people living there and 4 or 5 cars.

In a lot of cases rezoning is about acknowledging the current reality and enabling more appropriate ways to manage population density and affordability.

Calgarians' submissions to city council on the blanket-rezoning proposal have been published and more than a few folks seem to think this is the work of the World Economic Forum...

Example #1: "This city is now run by a mayor and councillors who are simply disgusting demons following WEF agenda"

🧵

robsonfletcher,
@robsonfletcher@mas.to avatar

Example :

"The current liberal government is being governed by principles of the world economic forum and the United Nations agenda 2030. This is communism and you are acting in a manner that Will destroy the city."

robsonfletcher,
@robsonfletcher@mas.to avatar

@Jonathanglick FWIW these 11 responses are among more than 5,000 (!!) submissions on the topic so I don't think they're too out of the range of expectation.

I don't really know if or why it's any greater here than elsewhere but I'd guess these things tend to build within a particular community and then become self-reinforcing, especially when repeated over and over in social circles & on social media.

People start to take it as fact because everyone around them believes it too.

As Calgary experiences a backlash against its single use plastics bylaw, this report is pretty relevant:

"But as DeSmog reported last year, advanced recycling is an industry concept, not a scientific one. In fact, according to CCI, “‘Advanced recycling’ is the industry’s most recent false solution intended to shield petrochemical companies from backlash associated with the plastic waste crisis they have created.”
