With the worlds apparent spiralling descent into fascism and the murmurings of mandatory conscription, i've been pondering whether, as humans, we consider ourselves to be "owned" by the state or whether we consider ourselves independent sentient beings. If someone told me I HAD to join the army, I would tell them where to go. "If you don't like it, shoot me" They may well take me up on that but ultimately we either give in or stand our ground. We have choices.

A thought about vs ...
In society's , billions of people will die, and billions of people will survive.
The only chance we have of minimizing the death and suffering is to convince people they're likely to be among the dead. People won't take the drastic measures that are needed unless they're scared for themselves or their loved ones.
Doomerism tries to convince people they're at risk. Positivism tells them not to worry.
Which is better harm reduction praxis?

If I understand correctly, the difference between (2) and (3) is whether one thinks that <x> is realistically doable. This is always going to be an ideological question, in that what people think is doable and what they think isn't is a core part of ideology.

To me, for example, the statement "we can't save the world without abolishing capitalism and patriarchy, and there's no way that power will allow us to do that so we'll need to overthrow that first" leads me to reply "cool, lemme roll up my sleeves and get started." This is because to me that sounds doable, so to me that statement is a (3). To you it might be a (2).

This suggests that different people, depending upon their own sense of their own potency or lack thereof, might read the same sentence as containing a different message.

On doomers and sentinel intelligence.

Many of us have been identifying strongly with Cassandra over the last few years. We watch the media downplay and dismiss one threat after another. We endure endless opinion pieces about everything from climate alarmism to coronaphobia. Influencers accuse us of hurting everyone’s mental health. Strangers call us doomers and fearmongers. Our friends and family treat us like we’re paranoid. When we share dozens or even hundreds of studies, they refuse to look at them. They say, “I don’t want to read anything that’ll bring me down.”

“I’m trying to stay positive.”

....
Here’s the thing:

You’re not a fearmonger.

You have sentinel intelligence.

Sentinel intelligence refers to a special cognitive ability that allows someone to detect threats before anyone else. Richard A. Clarke and R.P. Eddy talk about this trait in their book.... They review a number of natural and economic disasters throughout history. ”Not only were Cassandra's ignored, but “the people with the power to respond often put more effort into discounting the Cassandra than saving lives and resources.”

Well worth reading!

This story by @jessicawildfire has an interesting perspective for me anyways.

Hint: There's a lot of oil and gas under Gaza so it has to be vacated for big oil. Why else would the USA arm Israel so heavily? And the same is true for Ukraine.

The Gaza invasion is the US government supporting the oil industry. I've got questions.

I think it’s more complex than that, but I don’t deny the imprint of big oil on so much toxic policy. Biden is in a terrible fix re balancing the loyalty of deep pocket donors sympathetic to Israel against the loyalty of humanitarian voters who rightly expect his administration to exert more pressure on Netanyahu for restraint. So far, he’s been protecting the money and his only solid Middle East outpost. I don’t equate Biden with Putin or Netanyahu - not yet.

«The structural transformations that would be necessary to truly put off collapse indefinitely are enormous, and will not happen without first openly acknowledging that collapse is the likely result of inaction (i.e. of business as usual). We would have to transform economies to stop or reverse growth, assess and adopt practices geared for long-term sustainability, prioritize nature over ourselves, and establish a global cooperative to live within our means.»
