The older I get the more I find myself being a true introvert. My job requires me to be "on" all day. I interact with students and co-workers and definitely need my down time at home each night. Currently we have visitors until next Wednesday. This means going home and being "on". Even though I have fun when I interact with our guests I still dread it because I know I won't get to decompress in my usual manner. Today I'm very tired as a result. Time to put on my patience

Today is National Solitude Day. No matter how social we are, a little peace and solitude is always beneficial to help us recharge. I was reminded of this image I made in the Tetons last fall, when this lone horse seemed perfectly content to be off by himself for a while.

Blog post: Rachel Cohen's "A Chance Meeting: American Encounters" is a wonderful book offering vignettes of meetings between individuals who helped to shape American culture. Mark Twain and Willa Cather, William James and Gertrude Stein, and others. The conversations are interesting in themselves; they also have me thinking about how encounters with people and books have shaped the person I've become.

Do extroverts ever like, in their peak extrovertedness, maybe at a raucous party, pause for a few seconds and think, "This is absolutely perfect. This is bliss. But this ain't how life is supposed to be lived?" Because as an #introvert that is exactly what I find myself thinking sometimes when I'm perfectly isolated watching a movie and filling the empty room with the echoes of my own laughter while munching on potato chips.
I haven't read this article yet. As an #introvert, I just really like the closing sentence, "Then he dropped out of society." It's poetic and would be perfect on an epitaph. "Here lies (name here). Vanguard of justice. Revered by colleagues, loved by his family. Then he dropped out of society."
