During the #Munich conference I was asked why I am so gloomy. Well, somebody has to tell it like it is, so here’s how it is: Things are not going well
It is good practice to evaluate things honestly - with all their gloominess. And if we don't shock ourselves back into action it will get worse. In #Ukraine, in the rest of #Europe and possibly globally
#Ukraine is starved of ammunition and forced to pull back, #Europe is ⏩
↪ facing challenges which might test Article 5, and global instability emerges because autocrats are emboldened by #russia's action and our cautious response. This is not pessimism. This is fact
Baseless optimism is a form of self-deception, it is demobilising us. How can we expect to convince the public to spend more on defence, take a stronger stance against #russia and support countries on the eastern flank if leaders won’t admit there is an urgent need?
↪ because tomorrow might be too late. We need a push, a jolt, a shock to wake us up. The war is not over, it's far from won, the enemy is very much alive and our European future is at stake
I have no doubt that the West has the capacity to help #Ukraine win this war. That is a fact. It is also clear that #russia’s industrial power is no match for the united West. But...
We don't lack capacity, we lack the political will and urgency necessary to support #Ukraine and maintain our ⏩

Around 12% of all people living in #Munich took the streets today to protest against right-wing movements. Too much for our police to handle. The peaceful demonstration was halted after 40 minutes. We will come again!
@jwildeboer At the same time, protests are also taking place in medium-sized and small towns. Like today in Bad Tölz with around 1,500 participants out of a population of 19,000. I can't remember ever seeing such widespread protests in Germany.
I guess the protests in #Munich against fascism and far-right parties simply passed the acceptable limit of BMW cars being forced to drive slower and thus, after 40 minutes, 250000 protesters were sent home by the Munich police. #SarcasmButOnlyHalf
Our local #Munich journalists are obviously unhappy that up to 250.000 people showed up to protest against right-wing movements peacefully. The police decided to stop the protests after just 40 minutes as they couldn’t handle the mass of people. The organisers agreed. We all left as peacefully as we came. No violence. No fights between radical Antifa and police. What a nightmare for clickbait journalism! What a forceful statement that we, the people, have learned from history. We will be back.
@jwildeboer Local journos interviewed a CSU member who was "disappointed that there were members of antifascistic organization which are under supervision" at the protest.

Just fuck that the police decided to stop the #Munich protest. During my time in #Berlin in the pandemic I saw too many nutjobs, nazis and conspiracists protests with the complacency and help of the police.
J'ai fait mon plein d'endorphine ce matin en courant au parkrun sous un soleil éclatant, malgré les -9°C lorsqu'on a démarré (ça s'est vite réchauffé ensuite, il faisait -6°C 3/4 d'heure plus tard).
Notre marshal qui était posté près du lac a pu observer un nageur casser la glace pour piquer une tête dans le lac !

@pasqualeberesti Et avant que les parkruns ne soient en pause, il n'y avait que 8 parkruns en France. Une équipe de volontaires à Lyon a essayé pendant longtemps d'ouvrir son propre parkrun, mais ils se sont heurtés à l'administration

@pasqualeberesti oui et alors ? A Paris aussi c'est l'hiver, et vous n'avez pas à subir les températures négatives et la neige au sol pendant 1 semaine. J'aime l'hiver, mais au bout d'un certain temps, j'ai envie de passer à autre chose
Réveillée par les klaxons des tracteurs des agriculteurs (soutenus par les klaxons des camions et autres voitures) qui arrivent de la campagne pour manifester à Munich. On a une belle couche de neige dehors, mais il fait froid brrrr.
