A thing that makes the bugfix so compelling: at no point has "throw more GPUs/nodes/buckets/bandwidth at it" been a solution. Not at any budget.

Okay, I think what the Voyager 1 team pulled off is one of the greatest feats of debugging in the history of computing 👌

46 years old hardware, 22.5 hours of light delay, and zero tolerance for mistakes. I'm getting nervous tics just thinking about it 😵‍💫

@floe I think the craziest part is how the dev environment looks like. I heard they literally have to go through archives to find the original engineering notes and that there is no working replica of Voyager 1 on earth so very hard to test beforehand.

Read a few of the stories about 1’s memory problems, but people don’t say how it was organized.

If the failed chip contained whole words, then just that chunk of memory would fail. If it contained one bit of many words, all those words would be affected.

That suggests a design rule for long running spacecraft - use whole word memory devices so a failure doesn’t knock out even more memory. Same for chip design, put related bits nearby on the chip. Wonder if they have this rule…

Hey, they fixed Voyager I!

I bet that was tricky. It’s over 15 billion miles away, 24 billion kilometers. 136.3 AU. Almost nineteen light-hours away. That’s pretty far.

The probe is 47 years old. Younger than me! If I’d gotten my shit together, I could be at least 140 AU out from the sun by now. Well, I didn’t. Another opportunity passed me by.

A keyboard tweak I like:

I have a layer where numbers are arranged similar to a num pad.

But pressing the layer toggle key and shift to produce all the symbols I need during programming is kind of annoying.

To reduce these gymnastics, I added another layer with a one-shot layer toggle that exposes the symbols on the same locations of the numbers.

It's really good without modifiers (shift): hit the thumb key, then hit the symbol key, done.

J'en enfin reçu et configuré mon clavier de chez ZSA c'est un mécanique à touches plates, split, orthogonal en 60%, ultra programmable et portable... Et ben c'est génial (et les coulurs servent vraiment à qqch ici : ça indique le rôle des touches selon la "couche" active.

Maintenant faut apprendre à le maîtriser !

@lacraia It was a real dilema for rme between the two keyboards... But I wanted something very compact but the counterpart of beeing so compact (it's not even a 60% !) is that the learning curve is quite steeper.

But who cares : it's exactly what I wanted !

Mastering it will be my Everest... for the 2 or 3 coming weeks 🏔️

My utmost respect to the NASA/JPL engineers who have to debug Voyager 1's cryptic FDS issue with a 45 hour interval between sending the command and receiving a reply, using paper documentation, methodologies, and flight software and hardware that are all more than 40 years old and whose developers are mostly dead. Oh, and with no ground simulator. Incomprehensible.
