The #Fedora 40 Release Party just ended and it was great as usual to connect with familiar faces and get updates on current and upcoming things for the project. Fedora is alive and well with a thriving global community!
Is there any text-based, ideally distributed monitoring software out there? I want a TUI that shows me (e.g. with green/red highlights) the reachability of hosts (simple ping checks) while I'm doing network maintenance. Like a really simple, curses based nagios? It would probably look like a bloomberg terminal.. (I know this wouldn't be too hard to implement.. but I can't really believe it's not already out there...) #linux#TUI#monitoring#network#networking#sysadmin#software#curses
Speaking of #AffinityDesigner and my love of it, that might be the thing that prevents me from fully going over to #LinuxMint on my laptop. I feel like somehow that isn't an app that's going to work great in a VM? I'm not super thrilled about trying to set up dual boot just for one app, though. Seems overwrought.
...But I really do love Affinity Designer. I learned vectors on Inkscape and it was a breath of fresh air to come to Designer. #linux
There's been so many Windows enshitification moments where people say this is our best opportunity for helping more people get their freedom trough #Linux.
Now we have maybe the best of these moments yet – W11 demanding new PCs, W10 being killed off, and this whole Recall shit.
Yet, after all this, I've never seen any really newbie friendly website explaining why and how to try Linux – with simple text and elegant design.
It seems to me the #Gnome designers would be perfect for making this.
Time for this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News! In this one, we have a terrible feature being added to #Windows, we have the # KDE #Plasma 6.1 beta, and a 5 year plan for #GNOME!
#Linux users, where do you get your wallpapers? Looking for something cool for my new #KDE Neon desktop. You can also share yours! But remember to add ALT or tag with #ALT4Me so others can help if you are out of spoons
my #iphone6 smashed on the floor. touchscreen is slowly degrading; some letters impossible to type; and some buttons impossible to click...
Starting to think i have reached my limit... (cc @limitesnumeriques )
On top of the performance optimizations that Milan has done in #GNOMESoftware some months ago, I'm proposing my one-liner search performance trick for the #GNOME software center app store thingy that people love to hate on #Linux, to reduce the jankiness and improve performance further for most practical purposes. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/-/merge_requests/2032
Video of the interview with #guix founder @civodul is available. A great chat about the #nix deployment model, his interested in #guile and #free software. Lots of interesting chat about motivation in #freesoftware, #gnu and #linux - as well as the Plan9-ification of Guix!!
The new Linux phone from Jolla & its benefits? ⛵ :linux:
◉Sailfish OS - the only independent commercial mobile OS
◉Sailfish is NOT 100% closed source - Jolla plans to open the remaining blobs
◉More "Linuxy" than Android; Qt / Wayland / filesystem
◉Free of Google / Apple
◉Use Android compatibility in case an :android: app is needed
◉Jolla is a Finnish company - 🇫🇮 / 🇮🇸 are considered most trustworthy nations in Europe
