OUR CHILDREN'S RIVER

My name is Nixon, and I'm an A'i Cofán filmmaker, artist, and member of the #Sinangoe #IndigenousGuard.

You might be wondering what that means: an Indigenous guard. To understand it better, allow me to take you on a journey into my ancestral territory in the Upper #Amazon, a land of dense #forests and towering trees, crossed by surging #rivers. A land preyed on by #loggers and #miners.

"Every year the world subsidizes fossil energy adds 12 trillion dollars to the global economy. Take that away and you are in a fine pickle. You had better find something else to spend it on, and quick.

Here are a few items from my shopping list. All of these are steps along the way to a New Carbon Economy, one that mines greenhouse gases from the sky, burns them for energy, and then buries the #carbon waste underground, essentially forever." https://peaksurfer.blogspot.com/2023/09/my-new-12-trillion-dollar-annual-budget.html

Still too wet to go so instead I did one of my favorite things: hike into the trails and then head in random directions through the woods as the mood struck.
First off: vernal pools everywhere! Also, Red Efts. Still a little too cool for mushrooms, maybe in a week or two?
Lots of photos, so this will be a thread of some favs: vernal pools, Efts, and so much moss.

View from top of hill overlooking town and the valley, trees in foreground are halfway budded out.
See says Canada Mayflower, just a single leaf on each plant with big drops of dew, nestled in the moss on side of rotted tree trunk

Good morning.

I created some new photo art this morning. 2 new pieces; 1 b/w piece here.

They're visual contrasts between devastating logging & world famous tree, Big Lonely Doug. These creations are sparked by my lifelong love of ancient & the need to keep protecting them, against government lies & industry greed.

How massive were last summer's Canadian wildfires?

So massive that the area of forest destroyed--18.5 million hectares--is triple the previous record.

So massive that the carbon emissions from the destroyed tree bodies dwarfed Canada's annual GHG emissions from all other sources.

In fact, the emissions from Canadian wildfires in 2023 were roughly equivalent to 6% of global emissions for 2021.

In normal conditions, the lost carbon from wildfires is recuperated by forest regrowth within a few years. But with temperatures continuing to increase, there's less time between fires for such regrowth to occur. So, we're balanced on the edge of a major tipping point, where wildfires in Canada, Siberia, and Australia could turn forests from net carbon sinks into net carbon sources.

This article does a pretty good job discussing how scientists are integrating wildfire emissions into global carbon budget thinking, and carbon budgets generally.

How forests can cut carbon, restore ecosystems, and create jobs (phys.org)

To limit the frequency and severity of droughts, wildfires, flooding, and other adverse consequences of climate change, nearly 200 countries have committed to the Paris Agreement's long-term goal of keeping global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius. According to the latest United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate...

"Planting one trillion trees is wrong,” said Makarieva. Setting a numerical or area-based target “is lying to people”. Instead, the goal should be to restore ecosystem functionality. A beautiful plea for using the small water cycle & forests to reduce the severity of climate change.

Forestry Corporation NSW continue to vandalise our public forests, & were sentenced for logging hollow-bearing trees in Mogo State Forest.

FCNSW fined $20,000 and must pay more than $80,000 in legal costs.
More than 300 native species rely on hollow-bearing trees for habitat.

We want an urgent cessation of logging in NSW now.

GUARD OLD-GROWTH FORESTS FROM LOGGING

Mature and old-growth are a vital part of a healthy . They fight by storing massive amounts of ; give a home to imperiled like , and ; help support healthy ; and withstand better than young forests.

Sadly, most old-growth forests have been logged. We need to save what's left.

The parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee has found that the UK’s deforestation footprint per tonne of product consumed is higher than that of other countries, including China, calling it “unsustainable”. (A deforestation footprint is similar to a carbon footprint. It signifies how much deforestation occurs per tonne of product consumed).

Most likely Phaeolus schweinitzii (dyer's polypore). Boxborough, , 18 July 2015.

"As its common name suggests, the dyer's polypore is an excellent natural source of green, yellow, gold, or brown dye."

Fascinating, as I thought "Dyer" was a person's name. Although "schweinitzii" is from a person's name.
