Update: Problem solved!
In 1974, ANSI published the Standard character set for handprinting (ANSI X3.45-1974). It proposed a uniform method of #handwriting acceptable to optical character recognition technology of the day. It included only upper case letters.
It had some quirks: letter O has a tail at the top, like Q rotated 90 degrees. S has a little tail at the bottom left. U has a square base. Z has a full-width bar at mid level.
Is this signature written by hand directly onto the book, or is it a printed version of a handwritten signature? I want it to be the former, but my colleague thinks it's the latter.
It's of Rabindranath Tagore, Bengali poet and winner of the Nobel Prize for literature
As a kid I learned Zaner-Bloser cursive teaching script[1] in U.S. elementary school and then proceeded to never use it again. (Ballpoint and pencil just aren’t really suited for cursive.) I switched permanently to print, then oblique italic in early adulthood, which is still my daily handwriting.
However, due to my advanced #PIM processes, I rarely write things down on #paper.
I'd love to do so much more if there would be a great #FOSS solution for offline #handwriting#OCR. That would be a great investment by the #stationery industry! 🤔
It still offers better solutions compared to my #Boox#NoteAir#eink tablet.
Hello Friends, I need a little help reading a handwritten memo that I can't quite make out. I'll probably feel dumb if someone else can read it, but If anyone can decipher the parts I'm missing... #law#academia#handwriting#history
My hand written not taking device arrived 5 days early. It's a #Supernote Nomad #S6X2. Time for unboxing. Here's to hoping once it's configured that I can simple turn it on, immediately write as if it were a notepad, then later send OCR'd notes to my #Mac.
a brief tour of one of my wall-to-wall completed draft notebooks; this is a 480-page Nanami Seven Seas notebook with Tomoe River paper. (You can read the story without reading my handwriting 🙂)
When we write using pen and paper, we plan texts more carefully, remember the things we've noted down more accurately, and put less strain on our brains, compared to using a typewriter or computer. @TheConversationUS takes a look at some of the studies around this, and makes the case for continuing to teach handwriting in schools.
It would be more accurate in some ways than a generic handwriting recognition tool, because it can use syntax rules as hints for what you actually want to write, as well as apply them to auto-indent to the number of spaces you intended (with manual override options of course)
Just FYI, for people who write a lot with mechanical pens, check out the Kuru Toga line with rotating lead engine. Every time you lift up your pen the lead rotates slightly which keeps your lead relatively sharp to a point. They are also very affordable at <$20 on amazon.
Just a note, they are inexpensive so despite some of them looking like metal they are light and plastic. But they seem high quality and dont break easily.
I learnt a little walking cursive in Chinese calligraphy class, but I never got round to grass cursive. So I've been working with this 1958 Yale University Press book. It's hard but it's so much fun to get my pen to do these wild gyrations!
