@oct2pus I've only ever played shooters casually and even then it was mostly XBOX ones like Halo and Gears.

I wanna hear more about the PC shooter scene, whether current or historic. TF2 vs CS:GO vs OW and now Valorant. I'm curious about what stereotypes are associated with which games/playerbases and why TF2's scene was "completely non-profitable"

@oct2pus Interesting! Thanks for humoring me.

I tried to get into TF2 a few times including right after its release but playing an FPS with M+KB still doesn't feel right and all i had at the time was a mediocre laptop.

So i remember hearing about the Demoknight controversy due to how drastically a few items changed his playstyle. I didn't know about the meta though, like what team size or comps saw use, weapons were banned, or what modes were played.

This is fascinating

@RickiTarr I don't really trust any of the news that's relevant to me to get any traction on Mastodon. It's a cool social media platform but i go elsewhere for news that isn't about the current state of the internet.

: what's your video game, anime or manga hot take? Like an actually scorching hot take that you actually believe and would cause controversy.

*As an example of the kinds of takes i mean, on the radio they did sports hot takes and 3 that came up were:

  • any NBA player over 6'7" could become a professional soccer goalie with only a month of training
  • an educated sports fan could do about as well as any professional GM at drafting 1st round picks over a 10 year span just by following general scouting rankings
  • a decently fit person could rush for 1 yard in the NFL with a good enough O line

@ami_angelwings 1v1 Fighting Games better esports than MOBAs.

Fighting Games are infinitely easier for a casual observer to understand than MOBAs are

MOBAs have:
a bigger playerbase because players can always blame their teammates so there's less introspection required
more sponsorship because PC gaming has more and more expensive accessories and parts than consoles.

If we're supposed to use camel case for our HAsh Tags so screen readers can parse them, why do all the "suggested/autocorrected" hashtags on the website and the apps exclusively use lowercase letters?

There's some synergy missing here and it's frustrating, especially given how hashtags are basically mandatory

@Itty53 Exactly! Rome wasn't what a lot of people now imagine/assume/hope it was.

But also, a lot of the white people who idealize a specific vision of "the Roman Empire" don't have any ancestry from "Rome".

"Bruh, you're British. Let go of Rome. That wasn't you"

In the same way that some of us like the idea of inheriting ancient Egyptian achievement with no actual ancestral connection to North Africa.

seeing actual sports posts on my feed between the Baldur's Gate and the Linux/FOSS/Dev ish, suggests this place might actually feel welcoming one day, and not merely like it tolerates me.

    @tuckerm Good Question. Damn i hadn't even considered that. Any recommendations?

    If left to my own devices it'll likely be Infinite. I've had some FPS issues there and I'm how the X3D will tackle them.

    Maybe since that's what i play the most these days.

    Maybe I'll fire up again. Or . Maybe I'll go through my collection and see what isn't locked to 60fps.

    @BlackAzizAnansi No because comedy relies on shared (cultural) context. A meme is a meme because we're all familiar with it. Humor is a sense you gotta share with others

    If i say "Matt Barnes is if Rick Fox was Joe Budden" but u don't know who those 3 are, it means nothing. But when a MF said that at the kickback i died laughing

    @evan Mrs. Knight often complains how men's clothing, particularly the (basketball) shorts i wear when I'm not at work, have gigantic cavernous pockets, compared to women's casual clothing which often lacks any pockets at all.

    She's forced to carry a bag while i can often fit everything and then some in my pockets.

    The chinos/slacks/dockers i wear for work are different, but even then I'm guaranteed to always have pockets, where she must try very hard to find dresses/shorts with pockets

    The fragmentation among friends that follows Twitter’s collapse is exactly the kind of problem that Mastodon and the social web solves for. Imagine that you don’t have to pick and choose which new platform to adopt, or make and maintain a million accounts—because you can follow anyone regardless of which platform they’re on.     @Gargron I wish it Activity Pub or whatever actually worked that way. As it is my friends mostly refuse to try Mastodon and those that have have found it inscrutable and given up quickly.

    The emphasis on privacy has come at the cost of discoverability and ease of use of regular/simple/low tech users.

    🧵 Few accounts are signing up to Mastodon, despite the constant stream of apocalyptic announcements coming from Twitter.

    I think this indicates that we're in a period of consolidating what we've built so far, rather than seeing lots of new people arrive.

    Season One of Mastodon is over. The cast is established and most of the major plot lines are here. So where do we go?

    Mastodon is sometimes frustrating, especially the sanctimonious users who can't imagine why Masto would ever need to change, or why anyone would use other SM

    But it has a definite purpose and appeal, and I'm here as much as i am on Twitter, even if i use the two for entirely different purposes. Masto has a use case
