This is terrible news.
Bolsonaro certainly sped up clear-cutting in Brazil, but rain forest clearing for cattle grazing has been happening in Brazil for decades.
Those who eat beef have contributed to this problem. Not trying to food shame anyone but it's fact.
This data looks at top importers of Brazilian beef; China, the US, and EU are primary consumers of beef raised on slashed/burn rain forest land:

The EU has set a carbon import tax due to take effect soon. Carbon tax advocate Sheldon Whitehouse has noted that this forces the hand of US manufacturers, who'll either pay a domestic carbon tax or a foreign carbon tax on exports. Without adequate regulations & oversight, disease spreads. :

H5N1 has affected about 40% of dairy cows in the Texas Panhandle, where 82% of the state’s milk is produced, according to Spectrum News. https://spectrumlocalnews.com/tx/south-texas-el-paso/news/2024/04/11/texas-bird-flu-outbreak

Treeline,
@Treeline@toad.social avatar

@KimPerales

H5N1 is carried by wild birds. Climate change is altering bird migration, which could increase the spread of H5N1. For example, when migration timing is altered by warm conditions (as when migratory birds remain in an area longer due to agreeable weather, as has been observed with Canada geese), there's increased risk of disease transmission to local poultry/livestock.

Climate matters; if people want affordable milk & eggs, we need conservation, heat pumps, and renewable energy.

But there’s one line he hasn’t crossed. Until this year.

Trump 's said & done worse things than this -but the juvenile element of it—there's just something really particular about this. It was sort of uniquely grotesque.

Interesting, important article. Trump’s mockery of Biden’s stutter fits w/ the eugenics he’s pushing (e.g. COVID response, stoking racism/violence against immigrants). I'd have followed up by asking the Special Ed teachers who ‘forgive’ Trump for mocking Biden’s stutter if they adhere to evidence-based practices in their classrooms. Just because someone works in Special Ed doesn’t mean they have a science-based pedagogy or that they provide a rigorous learning environment. 1/

What a great list/word study; you can really see the word root connections across idioms.
The Spanish word 'hormiga' also relates to the idea of little bits/bites in that in Spanish 'miga' means 'crumbs.' In some areas of Mexico, the word 'migas' is also used to refer to 'chilaquiles' (a recipe involving old tortillas/tortilla chips, eggs, chiles, and whatever 'crumbs' or bits/bites of leftover foods you have to add).

Most impt. economic distinction b/w Biden & Obama: crisis relief -unemployment rate was high & rising when Obama entered office & 9% by Apr 2009. When jobs did return, most of those created paid poverty wages.

Biden’s advisers knew -govt didn’t spend enough to get unemployment under control. More$ would've meant more jobs +put upward pressure on wages.

Biden opted to spend $1.9T & continued to secure additional rounds of support, result: stronger labor mkt.

Good piece, especially the conclusion. For some reason the author doesn’t identify corporate media as a factor in the public's sense of the economy. ???
The author also never mentions by name the Chips Act or the Inflation Reduction Act. The linked info is good, but the brilliant Chips Act and IRA deserve mention, as they're helping propel the economic recovery. It's worth noting electrification/climate action is a huge jobs producer and very much distinguishes Biden from Obama.

Might be possible to reach some of the weabo nerds obsessed with the superiority of Japan by educating them on the history of labor (not all labor, but some) has been supported & respected in governing institutions & granted access to power.

A great editorial, accurate and insightful. I thought Biden's speech was excellent, rousing, refreshing, and was excited to hear him talk about a 25% tax on wealth over $100 million.

Biden reframed the discourse and reminded America that we are a diverse nation made stronger by diversity, that we can face and solve our problems. It was an inclusive, spirited speech that changed something; even if people don't recognize its full impact, they're feeling it.

Sunset time, and we are both ready to leave some frustrations behind and start tomorrow fresh.
I often walk at our local Botanical Gardens. Today, we decided to take Summer to walk there. It was a beautiful day. While I took Summer off to the side, our grandson approached the gatekeeper with our membership cards. Summer even has her own card. She was immediately concerned that our grandson didn't live with us and shouldn't enter on my family membership. I explained that he also has a family membership that I purchased, but we didn't have that card with us.
She wouldn't stop and didn't want to let us in. Meanwhile, there was a line of people waiting. I was not amused.
We left and found a different place to walk.
I asked Summer tonight why people are so angry and unkind these days.
She says she hears me and has no answers.
She says maybe we shouldn't go where we know we won't be treated nicely.
Maybe so.

There's gatekeeping, and then there's Gatekeeping. Summer probably doesn't write letters to Botanical Gardens, but I'd write a short note letting mngrs know the unfriendly reception you received even tho you're supporters/regulars. Maybe this person was having a moment, or maybe they spread ill will on the daily; either way, it's good for mgrs to know what's going on, what the user experience is on a given day. Sorry her hostility landed on you; good you have other walk options🌲 🌳

Good on you for giving feedback. Outdoor exercise is a necessity, and her walkblocking is wrong. May your letter help her learn to be nicer, or just neutral, when fulfilling her duties. 🙂
