Just your occasional reminder that "bush meat" is a racist term. It is a way to make hunting wild animals seem shady in a way that is only applied to Africans. In the USA, deer is bush meat.

boiga, (edited )
@boiga@kolektiva.social avatar

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs we call it "viande de bois" in Québec. (Meat that comes from the forest).

Hunting for food is no problem, as long as you respect your prey and don't overhunt. Maybe she campainged against bush meat because there is overhunting/poaching problem in some regions?
In this case, maybe end poverty and you'll reduce poaching...

    @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs I think fear/hatred of snakes is a bit less prevalent where I live, mostly because we don't have dangerous snakes. (Ringneck and garter snakes have venom, but if you're bigger than an earthworm it does nothing).
    Still, I try to educate people to respect all life, it's the least I can do. So far my nephew likes snakes, and had the chance to hold my ratsnake, so there's that.

    EARTH'S RING CURRENT JUST SPRANG A LEAK:

    "During this past weekend's strong G3-class geomagnetic storm, low-latitude spread as far south as and . Upon further review, most of those lights were not auroras at all. Everything in this montage is an 'SAR arc'.

    "'On Nov. 5th, the ring current was pumped up by hours of strong geomagnetic storming, with energy dissipating into these SAR arcs,' says Jeff Baumgardner of Boston University's Center for Space Physics. 'It was a global event. Our cameras registered arc activity from to .'

    "Recent research has linked SAR arcs to another phenomenon that is not an aurora: . The ribbon in the sky was not originally thought to have anything to do with Earth's ring current. Yet in 2015, observers in New Zealand caught a bright red SAR arc transforming itself into STEVE like a caterpillar into a butterfly.

    "On Nov. 5th, Mark Savage may have witnessed the same metamorphosis over Northumberland, :

    "Visible to the naked eye, STEVE materialized from an overhanging red arc. 'The entire process took about 10 minutes,' says Savage. This timescale roughly matches that of another SAR-to-STEVE transition observed over Canada in April 2022. Clearly, the two phenomena are linked, but researchers aren't sure how.

    "'The connection is still elusive,' says Carlos Martinis, a leading researcher in the field at Boston University. 'Sometimes SAR arcs evolve into STEVE--but not always. This is a very active field of research, involving citizen scientists and researchers.'

    "Did you see an SAR arc on Nov. 5th? Submit your pictures to Spaceweather.com."

    I normally call this a black rat snake, but after trying to look it up I ended up more confused... Any help with the ID? I'm in Northeast Ohio. I encountered it in a creek but it soon began climbing up the ravine back into the woods. It was very sweet though, even gently inching closer as I crouched down.

    Obsoletus or Spiloides could work. Even though Spiloides are called "grey ratsnake", they are black in the northern part of their range, and become paler the more South you go.
