I have been working with Web technologies since 1992. I have co-founded two browser companies, Opera Software and Vivaldi Technologies. I was CEO at Opera and I am CEO at Vivaldi.

I am a strong proponent of open standards. I believe in building feature rich products that can be adapted to the needs of users without collecting information about usage. I believe no company has the right to profile their users.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

I have been building browsers for 30 years now. First Opera and now Vivaldi. My estimate is that more than 1 billion have used one of my browsers or both. Have you?

Feel free to share your story!

Question : Do you know how Norwegians fill out their tax returns?
Answer : They don´t.

This is an oversimplification, but years ago Norwegians started to get pre-filled tax returns in the mail. Later they stopped getting them, but instead had to do an OK online. Now even that is not needed. No comment means it is is OK. You can rectify and modify details online, if needed.

The reality is that the government already had most of the data needed for most individuals. Your salary is reported by the company you work for. Your bank details, including anything you have in your accounts, any loans, stocks, bonds, etc., is reported as well. Your kids are known as well. There might be details to add, but most is known. Why waste people´s time filling out details that are already known and risk people making mistakes?

When will the US get there?

One day after launching Vivaldi on iOS, Vivaldi is the top iPad app in Norway and #5 on iPhones. Not a bad start at all. We are on the list in many other countries as well.

Make sure to share the great news with all your friends! @Vivaldi is now available!

I had a survey where I asked users on Mastodon which Vivaldi products and services they are using. This is the result:

83% Vivaldi on Windows, Mac & Linux.
65% Vivaldi on mobile
56% Vivaldi sync
39% Vivaldi Social (Mastodon)
13% Vivaldi Forums
9% Vivaldi Blogs
1% Vivaldi Automotive

11% used none of the Vivaldi products and services.

724 responded.

It is great to see how many are using Vivaldi across devices and sync. Vivaldi is one of the few browsers that offers browsers on all major OS and the only browser to do that and provide the browser in cars as well.

It is also great to see how many are using the different Vivaldi services. We are happy to provide ways for our community to engage and to support the Fediverse!

If you wonder what Vivaldi is, the best way to figure that out is to download it from vivaldi.com.

The Norwegian government wants to ban Crypto mining. I hope they do and that others follow. It is time for this nonsense to stop.

So what does it mean for a browser to have AI built in? Does it mean that it is using your browsing data? Is it using it for ads or for profiling?

Is AI just another reason to collect your data? What are the so-called AI browsers doing today?

Would you use a browser that has AI built in?

I have provided three choices. The first one is that you want AI and do not care if the data is used for ads and profiling. Two : you do not want AI at all. Three: Want AI, but only if the data is not used for other purposes, such as ads and profiling.

  • Made it easy to personalize, with custom keyboard shortcuts, custom mouse gestures, custom themes and a lot more.
  • Included a powerful mail client, calendar and feed reader in the desktop browser.
  • Built in a tracker and ad-blocker, for better privacy.
  • Made it available on most all platforms, including cars.

We will continue to try to win you over. How about giving us a try? If you are already using us, thanks!

This month it is 30 years since I started working on browsers. April 1994 is when Geir and I started working on the Opera browser. We founded the company a year later.

Initially I made the UI, while Geir did a lot of the core.

Since that time I have dedicated myself to making the Web live up to its potential. First at Opera and now at Vivaldi.

If you ever used Opera and you have not tried Vivaldi, I invite you to give us a try!

If you never used Opera or Vivaldi, you are invited as well!

We at @Vivaldi continue to be the only browser company all in on Mastodon and the Fediverse.

We have made our own instance, Vivaldi Social. Any user that has a Vivaldi account for sync or other services, can easily enable a presence on Vivaldi Social.

We have integrated Mastodon as a Web panel into Vivaldi.

We include links to Vivaldi Social into Vivaldi.

We also work on integrating our blogs and forums into the Fediverse.

We hope others will follow. Mozilla has talked a lot and we hope they will join us fully soon.

Do people want AI in their browsers?

If the survey I did on Mastodon is anything to go by, most people do not.

2% Want AI in their browser.
25% Want AI in their browser, if their data is not used for other purposes, such as ads and profiling.
73% Do not want AI in their browser at all.

575 entered the poll.

A lot of browser companies are now pushing AI in their browsers.

I guess the 2% have a lot of browsers to choose between.

Results on my #survey about trackpad tap to click.

114 responded.

65% enable tap to click and love it!
29% disable tap to click.
6% had tap to click enabled and hate it!

So about two thirds prefer tap to click.

Personally I would argue that it should be off by default, but I belong to the last group. I was finding that I was having a lot of issues with my trackpad and most went away when I changed the setting. I still have an issue at times that clicking sometimes leads to right clicking.

I have been using trackpoints for years, so I guess I am rather used to an experience with clear button clicks.

My first EV was a VW e-Golf. Got it in 2019. Now we have three EVs in the family. I got the Polestar 2, the first car to have @Vivaldi available. We also have an Audi e-Tron.

Most of the time we charge at home. It is easiest and most of the time we do not drive far enough to have to charge somewhere else. When we do, there are fast chargers.

The cost of charging is a lot less than using gasoline.

The range of these cars is not as large as many of the newer models, but it does not matter, most of the time.

If you have never tried an EV, maybe next time you should give it a try. IMHO it is a much better experience.

One of my favorite new features in it is the calendar event templates. If you are one of those that likes to be quickly able to add events that last 45 minutes and have notifications 25 minutes before, templates are for you!

Enjoy!

Meta Threads is here. Like Twitter it does not show you the latest messages at the top and like Twitter it shows you a lot of content you are not interested in.

Meta Threads is at this time not federated.

Innovation in practice!? 😀

Is it possible that people will move from Threads to Mastodon when and if it is federated?

If you have never used M2 or M3, maybe it is time to give it a try?

What is your favorite Sausage / HOT DOG?

In some countries, sausage is a big part of the culture. It is clearly the case in Iceland and Norway, although others will likely claim to have more of an ownership to it.

But what is your favorite? I will list a few options, but I am sure you will have options I have never heard of or tried and I would like to know what I am missing!

  1. The Icelandic hot dog is a big deal and a hot dog stand is one of the more popular restaurants in Reykjavík! Typically served with ketchup, mustard, raw onion, fried, dry onions and remoulade.

  2. Norwegian hotdog. Typically served at a gas station. Similar condiments as in Iceland. Fan favorite is cheese sausage wrapped in bacon and shrimp salad.

  3. Danish sausage with bread. Instead of a hot dog, the typical Danish sausage is served with a side of short bread, ketchup and mustard.

  4. Polish sausage or Kielbase. Large sausage with plenty of taste. Side of bread and condiments.

  5. Bratwurst. Fried German sausage. Typically served with bread, ketchup and mustard on the side. A lot of variations, though, including curry wurst.

  6. English pork sausage. Often served with breakfast.
