Bezos and Musk have it deeply wrong.
The problem isn't that we need a trillion people to have more Einsteins or Mozarts.

The problem is we don't nurture and protect the ones we have.

Stephen Jay Gould wrote: "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops".

A turning point. Mastodon is a far better source of information on the Russian situation now than Twitter. Follow the Russia and Ukraine hashtags.

Tip of the Day!

Here is a reminder to everyone [rightly] pissed at the incredibly high cost of peer-reviewed journal articles behind paywalls:

If you send an email to the lead/corresponding author (whose contact is almost always provided in the article, or easily found with google) and ask for a copy of the article, the author will almost universally be delighted to send a copy [legally] to you, free.

We authors LOVE it when someone asks for a copy of our articles!!!

Climate refugees. Canadian

If you don't think Elon Musk will use his control of Starlink's space-based internet monopoly to further his right-wing, authoritarian, anti-democratic goals, you're not watching him do exactly that right now with his control of Twitter.

And he's already done it in Ukraine.

As a climate scientist who has warned about the threat of climate change for decades, I think the fact that we just saw what was probably the hottest day in recorded history, and probably in thousands of years, is deserving of attention...

If you're already tired of the drumbeat of news about relentless record heat, think how tired climate scientists are about warning about this for decades.

As more mainstream media open accounts here on Mastodon, try to follow them. As they build up audiences here, it will make it easier for them to abandon that Xhit site over there.

Does anyone have a list of good media accounts here?

You know that metaphor about how a frog in a pot on the stove doesn't know it's heating up and doesn't jump out until it's too late?

The pot has started boiling.

Elon Musk deleted a fact check on Twitter that contradicted his tweet about Bronny James and COVID.
Mr. "Free Speech" is really Mr. "I'll Censor Anyone Who Disagrees With Me"

He then deleted my tweet about that.

Incredible WSJ article on Exxon's efforts to prevent action on change.

“If a worldwide consensus emerges that action is needed to mitigate against Greenhouse gas effects, substantial negative impacts on Exxon could occur,” wrote Sprow [Exxon's head of Research]. “Any additional R&D efforts within Corporate Research on Greenhouse should have two primary purposes: 1. Protect the value of our resources (oil, gas, coal). 2. Preserve Exxon’s business options.”

If there's any lesson to be learned from the unfolding #climate disaster and 28 COP failures, it's that as long as governments cede power to corporations and billionaires, and as long as those corporations and billionaires make money from ecological destruction, then ecological destruction is what we get.

It's not just that Musk spent $44 billion on Twitter and turned it into $8 billion. It's that he has so fucking much money that he doesn't care.
Tax billionaires till it hurts.

If you're not worried about the accelerating trend in extreme climate events, it's because the media aren't reporting them.

How undemocratic was Kissinger? Here's one example:

He chaired the committee that oversaw CIA operations to undermine the Allende government in Chile and wrote: “I don’t see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves.”

For many years, the cheapest source of electricity has been investing in improving energy efficiency -- simply the idea of doing more of what we want with less electricity.

But truly, the cheapest source of electricity is not spending electricity on things we shouldn't be doing at ALL, like cryptocurrency mining.

Dr Peter Gleick, a co-founder of the California-based Pacific Institute, said Murdoch was responsible for pushing “decades of dangerous #climate misinformation and denial to millions of people”.
“His distortions have influenced policymakers and the public and wasted critical time that should have been spent slowing the climate crises we now see all around us....
“When our history is written, and the final roster of climate villains is posted, #Murdoch will be at the top.”

When I visited China in 2015, every motorbike and scooter in Beijing was already electric.
If people are surprised that China is now dominating the market for decent, low cost electric cars, they haven't been paying attention.
It's the American car manufacturers who, once again, have had to be dragged kicking and screaming into innovation and doing the right thing.
