Reddit is experiencing the VC dilemma.... Your startup is allowed to have core features and limited growth, and the end user experience is generally better that way in the long term...

VCs require infinite growth and that's unsustainable, so once the users run out.. they look to find cash any way they can like the privatisation of the APIs.

Patreon had the same problem. It had one job, then it suddenly started posting about microloans.

VC money, not even once.

Happy Mastodon 4.2.0 Day! :420:

To celebrate the release of the long awaited major upgrade, I've written a short blog with a list of the hard work that Big G, Claire, Renchap and the rest of the Mastodon community have completed over the last few months!

https://shlee.fedipress.au/2023/mastodon-4-2-0-post-toots-everybody/

(I'm sure I've missed some improvements/features. Feel free to @ me and I'll update the list)

People talk hard about blocking Threads because of numerous privacy issues / surveillance capitalism reasons.

but, I'm likely blocking them for much more boring reasons.... They have hundreds of TBs of storage, unlimited bandwidth and a marketing budget (5 million people signed by in the first few hours).

has the ability to simple price administrators out of the market - using the classic method of just outspending your enemy with a dumptruck of money - Simply by existing in the same ecosystem as us, they can and will increase our server/storage costs until admins like myself drop out. (THANK YOU PATRONS/SUPPORTERS)

If I wanted to open communicate with -- I fear I simply won't be able to play the same game as them for very long.... and I foresee plenty of other admins dropping out for that reason

Regarding the current spam.. the fediverse is built in a very strange way.

10,000+ mastodon servers (excluding the thousands of other services) all managed to different levels of complexity, by different people, running slightly different versions (or even different forks).

There is pretty much no coordination from a technical level to share threats or risks outside of an ever more cursed series of groupchats and discord servers..... infact mastodon doesn't even have a concept of "server to server" communication (subject to change very recently) so admins couldn't forward spammers emails/ip addresses or any kind of metadata incase of attackers using any kind of shared infra.

There is nothing not even a captcha (until recently) stopping people from spending an hour writing a few scripts to create millions of fake accounts and spamming the ecosystem.. or creating a DOS bot to upload large files on bulk and replicate those across from 10,000 S3 mirrors wasting bandwidth and money.

You could easily bankrupt most of the fediverse in a week because nobody watches their data usage and lots of people pay for bandwidth.

Now.. lots of people have been talking about making things to improve this ecosystem, but nobody has the cash to fix this problem "correctly"... but the good news? There are a few projects on the go to try to fix this.

2024 is the year of the fediverse reinventing the wheel when we're been dealing with spam on the internet since it started... but I do love a new wheel

I'm going to write something longer as the admin regarding Threads.. but for now, I'm hoping to encourage the Mastodon developers to develop this place in a way that shifts a little of the authority from admins to users about what they can/cannot see, and how your toots & content is/isn't shared (similar to the opt-in for full text search).

Claire already has a plan in the works to allow people who want to see Threads to opt-in, and those who don't can tell Threads to get stuffed...

and as a whole, I'd feel better being in a situation where everybody here can "Choose their poison/risk" instead of me forcing your hand. We will see how the future holds.

(I'm never going to remove the restrictions on nazi instances, but in regards to Threads, I'm going to choose safety and my moderator team for now). Threads needs to earn my trust.

NO MASTERS. NO ADMINS.

Mastodon Admins, I highly recommend looking at sportsbots.xyz -

This instance is a twitter bridge cloning sport tweets that was using more than 1Tb of storage (1/9th of my total storage for a handful of accounts)

As somebody who is on the board of multiple not for profits…. “Mastodon has known entity on board” is not the hot take you think it is.

It’s self evident people want this place to be better and it is… but building a better place requires developers putting food on the table.

At worst, it’s kind of a condemnation that the community as a whole failed at the financial support side of the project to back up our ideology… Better mutual aid for the developers might have driven a different path.

Complaining about the NFP having capitalists is not praxis… NFPs have rich well known people on them to give confidence to other rich people…… it’s not a conspiracy

The important element is influence. What influence do we have over the project? How can we capture more?

(This is not support of the board members)

Is anybody good at editing STLs? I have a modal I want to negative cut some text and a SVG logo onto the back.

I'll happily throw a few bucks because I've tried and failed to get the Blender Boolean cut to work!
