The world’s biggest solar plant has come online in China, capable of powering a small country with its annual capacity of more than 6 billion kilowatt hours.
The facility in a desert region of the north-west province of Xinjiang covers 200,000 acres – roughly the same area as New York City.
The 5GW complex, which was connected to China’s grid on Monday, is powerful enough to meet the electricity demands of a country the size of Luxembourg or Papua New Guinea.
I'm still waiting for those notifications to start streaming in about a geomagnetic storm! In the meantime, I guess I just have to settle for imaging that monster sunspot region. That chunky one in the lower left is the one to watch! (this image is from earlier today)
@battusphilenor It really bothers me how many people (including legislators, I guess) seem to think solar needs to happen in centralized locations. We've got plenty of buildings solar could be on and that would put it closer to where it's used. But that would mean less profit for utilities, so...
@meganL@battusphilenor This is definitely driven by lobbying by the existing electric utilities. They are screaming about not being able to maintain the electric grid unless they own solar capacity, and they want to do it in bulk. They are designed like they are still in the coal age....
Been finalizing the design and layout of my #solar panel array, which will be a post and beam structure topped with ironridge hardware.
Current interesting problem: The front of the array is currently set at only 1 foot above ground. This will make one corner very hard to keep clear of plants, and there is also a small hillock in the way.
I'd raise the array 3 feet or so, but the back is also on a slant, and the longest back post is currently maxxing out the size of 6x4" posts, at 16 feet.
This will be a 30 panel array, mostly because that's about how many come in a pallet. Dimensions are 22 feet by 23 feet with a 13 foot rise front to back.
I can’t find a manual for this thing and as result am unable to tell if it is broken, or if I’m just an idiot.
There are four LED lights. They are off if the solar panels are not receiving sun. They are all lit if it is. if you give it a teeny sliver of ambient light, one will blink. There are no buttons. There appears to be no reset switch.
I hadn’t tried plugging it into something while it was charging. THEN they indicate they’re receiving power AND the 4 indicator LEDs drop to 1. They instantly jump to 4 after unplugging.
I think the battery just can’t hold a charge any more.
@bazcurtis Much as I'd love to help I'm afraid I don't actually own a heat pump at the mo (partner yet to be convinced of financial aspect!) so my opinions are all based on hearsay 🙂
I've read this book: https://heatpumps.co.uk/book-heat-pumps-home/
...worth reading. Most sources (including this book) seem to suggest that it's better for efficiency to have (a) longer cycle times, & (b) higher flow rates (i.e. not using radiator valves/TRVs/Zoning).
Really glad you're getting your install soon - keep us posted 🙂
@ChrisWarwick Sorry, I thought it was your link about your heat pump. We will be happy if we break even. We did it to have one less gas boiler in the world.
Exciting! This is the next level of #solar biodiversified #agrivoltiacs farms: solar panels spaced among agricultural crops & planted with plant species that increase biodiversity. 👏
The parcel of land will have a 54 MW agrivoltiacs facility that will:
— host #wildflowers species
— provide as a wild animal shelter
— feature amphibian ponds, #bird baths, nesting boxes, & breeding places to protect endangered Lesser kestrel #birds
#Welver#Dortmund#Solar#energiewende#verkehrswende#minicamper#fahrrad
