I see people making judgments about those that still remain on #BigSocial those that use “ #AI “ , those that work for #governments those that don’t use #foss etc whatever purity tests you lot have. I don’t respect you people. You’re the same people that have nasty racist, sexist, homophobic family, friends and colleagues that you call “good people” some of you are also these kinds of people yourselves with. The majority of the people you are critical of happen to be marginalised folk. People that don’t have the means, resources, support, time etc to do these things thus “convenience” is a big part of how they survive.
Social media companies are receding from their role as watchdogs against political misinformation, abandoning their most aggressive efforts to police online falsehoods in a trend expected to profoundly affect the 2024 presidential election.
I wish there was a #Fediverse equivalent to #TikTok and #snapchat to help younger viewers interested in Fedi and protecting themselves from #BigSocial. I also hate the soul sucking algorithms that just feeds younger viewers bs
So, is #BigSocial poised to burst its own bubble? I'd say it's likely, and quite soon at that.
Consider what we've seen so far with #Twitter and #Reddit: people from both have jumped ship to the #Fediverse. When (not if) #Facebook and #Instagram fall, the same will happen, regardless of whether they have an app that federates.
Meanwhile, we have the choice to build safe, intentional, and vibrant communities on #Fedi without needing to "disrupt" or chase breakneck growth.
RE: Anonymous accounts. I was a queer teen in a Southern state and a religious right household. I get the value of anonymity in understanding yourself.
But let’s get real. That’s not why most people use anonymous accounts. They enjoy the ability to say whatever they want while risking nothing. Often while attacking people using their real names.
@yaitorr@NMBA@briannawu Banking is pretty heavily regulated to preserve, if not anonymity, at least privacy. All communications from my bank urge me to keep them secret, and that's why a bank statement is useful as a proof of address.
#BigSocial encourages people to broadcast personal information, and mines data to garner more.
#MastIndia : is it possible for people still on #Bigsocial (such as instagram) to try and get the indian LGBTQ+ community pages on there to also set up pages on #pixelfed and #mastodon and help them understand the #fedi ?
#Security#Nerds and #Experts of #Mastodon, I have a #Question for you.
.
.
I am attempting to de-#Google my digital life (as much as is possible at the moment). I got myself an #Android#MobilePhone that does not have Google services installed on it, and I am using #FDroid, #AuroraStore, #APKPure, etc. to get the apps, and using the #AppBrain#AdDetector and #DuckDuckGo's #App#Tracking#Protection (#Beta built into their mobile browser).
.
I am doing my best to use #minimal apps, and only getting ones that are not security focused when necessary. I am not logging into Google, or any other #BigSocial/ #BigData services except when necessary.
.
My question is, are there any #SMS / #Texting apps that allow you to login on the #Web and #sync messages to your phone (even if only on the same network), and a #keyboard that has #VoiceToText that does not use Google or #Microsoft? I am currently using #SwiftKey, but only until I figure out the #T9 app I am using with the KB (HYBRID phone running Android 11).
Does this bsky architecture just replicate Jack's threat model from when he was running a #BigSocial site?
auth = delegate to PDS
censorship = have govt chase PDSes
bad content = blame labellers
bad algo(s) = blame FeedGen marketplace
Instead of trying to proactively design a better social experience, could the intention be to shed liability for all those thorny problems by ... outsourcing them?
