A reminder: BlueSky isn’t decentralized until anybody can install a server and run their own node and communicate freely with every other BlueSky user.
Until then it’s just another Jack-associated social network.
Admittedly, I am skeptical of Bluesky. Mostly because I have seen people like Jack Dorsey churn out reinventions of the wheel time and time again, only resulting in products that are harder to use, more obtuse, combative to poor people, and built with a single point of failure (an oracle or something).
Like, everyone is bullish on this now, but everyone seems to forget that Dorsey owns a crypto exchange. This shit is going to be powered by crypto at some point.
@msprout#BlueSky will have a very quick rise and then flame out like an asteroid in low orbit, but if it at least enables a bunch of people to get of the bird site that might be worth it
Anyone know if there is a tool to find your #Mastodon followers/following that’s on #BlueSky? Like how we had when we moved from that other site to here?
People really seem to want to latch on to #Bluesky I'm having a hard time reconciling this. Have we not learned our lesson? It could easily be subjected to the same fate as the bird site. I have no plans to expand to yet another social media platform at this point.
Alright, it looks like #Bluesky is becoming Normie Mastodon, so I’ll have to actually use that account. I’m not leaving this place but I would like a good bridge, which I think already is in the works but does anyone have any details for people that might want to cross post?
For anyone on BlueSky, I can be found with my last name as my custom domain. Love to see what kind of overlap there is between the two communities #bluesky#twitter
Everyone complained about Dorsey and his handling of Twitter back in the day. Why do folks seem so eager to jump on BlueSky rather than Mastodon lately? 🤔
@thomasareed@erickolb That’s a bit generic. I have not studied in detail yet the promise #bluesky makes, but its decentralized components plus the plug and play algorithms seem rather specific adjustments to the original model that you consider a failure. I’ll eventually make up my own mind on this but the paradigm is not the same in an obvious manner.
My favourite thing about #Bluesky is that it uses domains as usernames, because it means there's absolutely no reason for me to get in early to register a good one.
I feel like I've largely rebuilt the community I had on Twitter over here on #Mastodon and am just not interested in #BlueSky right now. I'm honestly disappointed that they deliberately chose not to have #ActivityPub compatibility. Also, I don't really trust Jack, either. He very intentionally pushed for Elon taking over Twitter. Going to BlueSky seems sort of like falling for your ex again because they changed their name from Brianna to Bri and started wearing a leather jacket.
Let's also not forget that #BlueSky and #Nostr are still a Hail Mary pass attempt at finding a way to keep #crypto going. Instead of $8/mo for a blue check, you can drop some crypto. Is this really a better vision for the future of social media?
@Whizanth@gmate8 You're correct that #ATProto itself doesn't use crypto but that doesn't mean it isn't a planned thing for #BlueSky itself. Considering Jack is behind it and largely funded it with bitcoin, it's not hard to connect those dots.
There seems to be a growing amount of uninformed, negative posts on #Mastodon about #Bluesky.
It’s unfortunate that a platform which believes is populated by open minded people do not gather information themselves to form a balanced opinion, but rather jump on the “echo chamber” bandwagon instead.
Kind of reminds me of behavioral patterns on #Twitter. Remember it’s not the platform, but what you bring with you that matters.
@alastor8472 Sure, there are a lot of concerns about minor issues with an app in its beta phase that are being overblown. That always happens with new products, #ActivityPub clients included. A lot of those minor issues will surely be resolved and don't maybe deserve too much attention.
But there is also a growing amount of informed, realistic posts about fundamental issues with #BlueSky and the #ATProtocol. Issues that will likely not be resolved as they are intentional design choices baked in.
But for everything there is a price. I think #BlueskySocial makes a bit more of a balance between #Twitter and Mastodon’s spartan approach. Including algorithms, search, where it’s usefulness for discoverability will also have a another side of the coin.
In the end the user decides though, as long as it’s well informed.
