President Joe Biden’s Threads account @potus is federating on the Fediverse!

And I’m following him from atomicpoet.org!

Wow! This is as monumental as Barack Obama joining Twitter! A truly historic day for the !

The Fedipact table showing which servers are blocking Threads is not accurate!

For example, it says that atomicpoet.org is blocking Threads when, in fact, this is not correct. So view this entire site with skepticism.

@trumpet please stop blocking threads so that I can follow and boost @POTUS

This policy of blocking entire instances simply because you don't like who runs them is silly and detrimental to the Fediverse not to mention our democracy.

vetehinen,

@schizanon @trumpet we're starting to see why the decision to block threads is a difficult one once federation is actually widespread. Many accounts people find important to have access to get blocked when it is done at the instance level. It was definitely smart for to move on this early since a decision that's already been made is harder to reverse.

The good news is that you can always migrate if the instance doesn't make the choices you want.

I guess that I should create a new filter to discard ”@potus” from my timelines.

I'm so curious to see how many instances changed their mind on the anti-Meta just to able to read @potus posts.

I'm really getting nervous about how so many are embracing Threads. When I first heard they were going to federated, I had hoped we would see a stand for users' privacy. wasn't taken up my instance admin, and even the user level block seems worthless as the POTUS account on Threads is still visible demonstrates. 😑😑😑

If you want to complain to @verge about their blatant transphobia over then I’d recommend you do a user search on your instance because a lot of their editors and writers are on dot social. Real people you can contact that aren’t bots. I won’t post them here in case someone decides I’m inciting something… Which I’m not! I’m just offering information to the masses!

THE reason

i made fedipact to begin with lol

quoting https://fedipact.online/why

"the purpose of The Pact is to embolden instances to commit to blocking project92/barcelona/threads. a lotta peeps were already talking bout preemptively blocking it since the march leaks, me included. and the idea popped into my head that maybe if we had like, y'know, a thingy peeps could sign to show their support for it... it might weaken that argument that it's like pointless or whatever, and might make that choice easier to make"

Letting a paedophile babysit your children makes about as much sense as letting Meta federate with the Fediverse. Oh, they're charming and seem sincere? That's makes it all better, then. Sorry I fretted.

Meta are provably Evil, a place where evils of all degrees throng like flies around shit. If Gargron et al won't reconsider or even adhere to their own guidelines about problematic servers, then their servers should also be cast out to live among the Truth.socials, because they're effectively saying they don't give a steaming pile about what the Fediverse stands for or the users therein.

i think the most annoying thing about this whole discourse is that people refuse to judge threads by the standard of any other fedi instance

like if a mastodon instance got set up and federated right now and it allowed the shit threads allowed it'd be widely defederated IMMEDIATELY

there are accounts literally CALLING FOR THE DEATHS OF QUEER PEOPLE on there right fucking now

the only reason people are even willing to give them a chance is because it's a big corpo, but that should only be reason to give them less of one lmao. especially considering meta's history in particular

don't let them lower the bar for moderation standards here

FEDIPACT RAP (demo)

angelteeth, to FediPact
@angelteeth@kolektiva.social avatar

Probably a lot of the problem causing people to remain stubbornly on instances like mastodon.social & the other big ones that federate with threads & shit is some kind of inability to understand the concepts of horizontalism and federation themselves. People want the fediverse to be a "replacement" for corporate internet with someone at the "top" who just takes care of shit for them without them having to really be involved in building the experience and even the infrastructure themselves.

And I get it. I am not a tech person. My literal job for over a decade has been very rope-and-hammers, working with "tech" that's essentially over three centuries old. Everything I have taught myself about Linux, for instance, has been at the cost of a LOT of my personal time & frustration. So I do think that part of it is that folks who do know the tech and do build the infrastructure have become accustomed to being a sort of hidden or even ignored minority (numerically) compared to tech users. And that's real. And I do think that this requires a shifting of everyone's understanding of their roles in these projects.

But as a tech user, I am trying to recognize my responsibility towards learning more about how these technologies work, if I want to keep using them. I also want to call on the technologically-minded to recognize their responsibilities to teach and make knowledge accessible. This isn't unique to the high-tech world. Going forward, we all need to recognize our interdependence on a greater level, and change how we view the systems that we rely on. We can decide NOT to rely on some of them, for sure, but no decision we make about that is truly made in a vacuum. If we want things like the fediverse (or the internet in general) to continue, we need to understand that it can only be a cooperative endeavor.

Like I said, this goes for everything. Water. Transportation. Food. Shelter. But in the case of tech, we all have further to go to break out of the user/provider binary. At least to the point of understanding that if we want anything like a "free" and federated internet, we can't just ignore movements like the as not being applicable to us. If you want a twitter experience, go to twitter. If you want a facebook experience, stay on facebook. Don't bring that shit into a project where we're all trying to learn how to break out of corporate control. This learning may not be easy for most, but it's necessary and if you're already here on the fediverse I don't think I need to explain why.

Interesting new details have emerged concerning planned machinations for Meta's takeover of the fediverse. The information was revealed at a "data dialogue" in San Francisco on the subject of "Meta’s Threads Interoperating in the Fediverse".

An account at this blog post: https://reb00ted.org/tech/20231208-meta-threads-data-dialogue/

And more info in this Masto thread: https://mastodon.cloud/@joemcl/111566221062518491

It seems that the plan is to gradually roll federation out in stages over the next year. The most telling reveal is in the screenshotted toot by Meta advocate Evan:

"Also, as far as I could tell, the most important use case for them is that a creator could move from Threads to their own server, even if they get de-platformed. I think the major motivator here is Mark Zuckerberg having to go testify in front of Congress twice a year or whatever, and getting grilled by conservative Congresspeople about de-platforming. Being able to say, you can get kicked off Threads but keep your followers, is a big win in this situation."

If correct, the impression here is that Meta is interested in ActivityPub's account portability, so they can offload problematic fascists to the fediverse without too much disgruntlement. They see the fedi as a dumping ground into which they can externalize toxic users without having to either moderate them on their own server, or provoke them by wiping out their social graph.

In Zuckerberg's scheme, our community is to become a landfill for fascism.

Never, EVER trust . There's no benefit of the doubt here; they squandered that ages ago. Their content moderation is a joke, and they'd much rather serve advertisers and shareholders than users. Keep their hateful content out of fediverse!

If your instance isn't blocking , always remember that you can block the threads.net domain yourself.

why should we federate with them when...

"extreme anti-trans hate content remains widespread across instagram, facebook, and threads. characterized by fear-mongering, lies, conspiracy theories, dehumanizing tropes, and violent rhetoric, these posts — many by high-follower accounts — aim to boost engagement, generate revenue, and seed hateful narratives about trans, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people. these accounts profit from such hate, and so does meta and its shareholders"

i think the whole framing of fedipact and the meta surrounding blocking threads as being "mere drama" is really fucking annoying

like... this might just be a small inconvenience to you, but this is a matter of SAFETY for us. it's about keeping our communities free from harm, both in the short and long term

brushing it aside as simple internet drama just shows you don't really give a fuck about what happens to us
