One of the big complaints I've heard about Apple TV+'s "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" is that there isn't enough Godzilla or other kaiju in it.
Now, I'm a huge fan of the kaiju genre, and would love to have seen them in every scene in this show.
But that belies the fact that it's called "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," and it is essentially the origin story of PRECISELY that: The clandestine organization tasked with keeping track of giant monsters.
A friend of mine had the privilege of vacationing in #Japan over the holidays, plus the even more enviable privilege of getting to watch #Godzilla Minus One in a cinema.
It wasn't his first time watching in a Japanese theater, and he could tell just how good the movie was from the audience's very atypical, enthusiastic reception.
Meanwhile, there are no plans for a theatrical release here in the #Philippines. 😢
I really enjoyed the show. The slow pacing was really great for the story they tried to tell.
I don't like the finale as much as I hoped but it's not terrible or even bad. Just some typical cliffhanger stuff that was unnecessary. A second season or another film in the #MonsterVerse would work without it.
I'm glad that #Godzilla had some screen time too. 💚 Best Monster.
This Sunday, on #Monsterdon, the weekly monster movie watch party where we overwhelm your feed with bad jokes about rubber lizards! It's GORGO (1961), a blatant ripoff of Godzilla by the brits. Gorgo was featured on #MST3k, so the big challenge this week is gonna be not accidentally replicating half of their riffs :P
So I have always had a soft spot for #Godzilla movies since I used to watch the really old ones with my dad on VHS and the new Monarch TV series has been very interesting because it goes into what the societal effects of having Godzilla around would actually be.
Like, I remember being a kid and joking with my dad about how whatever they had to evacuate Tokyo for the Nth time it seemed very orderly, but we got to actually see it this time.
#Godzilla King of the Monsters was really fun! No idea why it only has a score of 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. It wasn’t high art or anything but it was well made, quite epic & visually amazing. Bear McCreary’s score was great too. Poor Boston & Fenway Park though. 😢
One more installment to go! Godzilla vs Kong is said to be the most wild of the Monsterverse pictures & the one Monarch the TV series has the most direct ties to? We’ll see.
Glad I didn’t have to wait years inbetween these pictures!
