"The UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute analyzed Census Bureau data within the last two decades. This included the 2000 census count as well as American Community Survey 5-year estimates on population characteristics from 2010 and 2022. Their analysis indicates people in the United States who identify as Latino and Asian American or Pacific Islander, or 'AAPI Latinos,' rose from 350,000 to 886,000 in that period."
I went to a talk on Latin* naming politics by Dr. Cristobal Salinas. It was very informative, and now I'm going to use Latin* as a gender-neutral term to refer to Latin Americans generally in my writing.
Another takeaway: make sure to report people's race as they self-identify instead of assuming or grouping them into a term they don't identify with. Many non-binary Latin American people identify with the term "Latine", but not all, so make sure to allow people to self-identify. #latine
Red Scare at the Smithsonian? Battle Brews over Portrayal of Latino History in Planned New Museum
Last year, the Smithsonian Institution opened a temporary preview exhibition inside the National Museum of American History that has become the focus of controversy within the Latino community, as Republican lawmakers and others challenge what one conservative writer described in The Hill as an “unabashedly Marxist portrayal of history.” https://www.democracynow.org/2023/9/26/national_museum_of_the_american_latino #USnews#latine#latinx#history
Smithsonian’s Latino museum faces political winds before a brick is laid
In July, a group of Latino Republican members of Congress led a vote to eliminate the museum’s funding in next year’s budget, calling its view of Latinos insulting and inaccurate. Some conservative commentators have harshly criticized the museum’s preview exhibition, blasting it as a Marxist portrayal that paints Latinos as victims of an oppressive United States.

The thought of an #introduction post is daunting but I know it's important to share so folks know if/how they want to engage!!
I joined mastodon in April, became active in October, and joined this server at the timestamp of this post.
I'm in a longterm monogamous relationship who I will only talk about vaguely because he is shy and doesn't have an online presence 💛 I'd say we fall into some heteronormative tropes, but definitely not most or all. I'm working on deconstructing and working on pulling him on this journey with me!
I work in #tech but talking about it does not bring me joy.
I love my dog so so so much! I didn't originally want to get one, I'm more of a cat person. But so is my dog so it works out 😂

For my Non-Scottish International readers, The Fringe is a long-running Arts festival held in Edinburgh that we in Scotland justifiably hold dear, and that Edinburgh residents dread for the way it triples the population of their city every August. ☺️
Now more than ever we need marginalised voices to ring out so please have a look at and share this early entrant to the festivities. Being able to watch them online when they release should hopefully mean a much wider audience.
