I've always said that the was vulnerable to corporations in the long run.

What I hadn't bargained for was the willingness of the most informed people, particularly instance admins to be oblivious or complacent about this danger, and for so many here to literally welcome federation with malevolent corporations like / and .

is the lifeboat but will be the shore folks.

Very soon in Flipboard I will be able to follow @Gargron who is on Mastodon and @mosseri who is on Threads and @dansup who is on PixelFed. And I will be able to see, like and reply to any of their posts. And they will be able to see my replies and follow me from whatever app they're using. And anyone else who is following one of the three of us will be able to see our activity from whatever app they're using in the Fediverse. This is how things should be.

It's about more than connection. It's about content too, and most of all culture. There are many reasons to exclude , and their like.

Most of those reasons are why the fediverse exists in the first place and why many people came here.

That so many, especially admins and indeed Eugen ignore them is a mystery to me. They make 's job so much easier than it needs to be.

Regardless, I knew was inadequate and so push for .

I have much to look forward to in tech in 2024, but very little of that is to do with the latest tech frenzy.

Throughout 2024 most people are going to be chasing so called AI unicorns and rapidly drowning in unicorn poo, but keep an eye on peer-to-peer projects (not fedi) including tokens (not Blockchain, not defi or web3).

There are still projects putting values before shareholder value and some are ready to take off.

#Decentralization #SocialMedia #P2P #PeerToPeer #Spritely #Veilid #Privacy #Cybersecurity: "There are many technologies used behind the scenes to create decentralized tools and platforms. There has been a lot of attention lately, for example, around interoperable and federated social media sites using ActivityPub, such as Mastodon, as well as platforms like BlueSky using a similar protocol. These types of services require most individuals to sign up with an intermediary service host in order to participate, but they are decentralized in so far as any user has a choice of intermediary, and can run one of those services themselves while participating in the larger network.

Another model for decentralized communications does away with the intermediary services altogether in favor of a directly peer-to-peer model. This model is technically much more challenging to implement, particularly in cases where privacy and security are crucial, but it does result in a system that gives individuals even more control over their data and their online experience. Fortunately, there are a few projects being developed that are aiming to make purely peer-to-peer applications achievable and easy for developers to create. Two leading projects in this effort are Spritely and Veilid."

You need to build from the bottom up, so starting with a secure platform. is important because it can be the basis for the things you mention. Without it we see what happens and I expect fedi to succumb because it is not decentralised enough. We see it already with Meta / Threads and Medium.

So first we need secure, private p2p platforms that don't rely on altruism, but sustain themselves through sound economics.

Safe Network Update 14 December, 2023 (safenetforum.org)

Welcome to the last update of the year. We’re happy to be finishing on a high, with the CloserNet testnet and the community helping us check our fix for what we hope will prove to be the last major bug in basic data handling. We were making an assumption that nodes were being ordered by closeness to our node, whereas this was...

The definition of is really important. People tend to stretch it to suit the way they want to market their project. This confuses developers.

If a protocol only runs on servers, it can be p2p. But if those servers are used by a client, and that client doesn't have the same capabilities as the server, it's no longer P2P, now its a distributed system. Calling it p2p is intellectually dishonest.

This isn't debatable, it's computer science. There are no alternative facts.

This week we’ve all hands on deck, filling holes, bashing in nails and replacing rotten timbers in the previous testnet so we can launch the thing of beauty that is the ReduceConnectionsNet, which thus far seems to be sailing along pretty nicely. Can anyone recommend clear, not maths heavy, books or papers on peer to peer or distributed systems? Specifically I'm looking for:

  1. How to identify / verify a peer

  2. How to deliver a message when one peer is offline (no queuing on a central server)

  3. How to route a message so that no one else knows which two peers are communicating (Tor protocol?)

Starting to think about a social media protocol that doesn't fall foul of the UK's ridiculously broad , and leaves what you see in your own hands.

Feed curation as active or effortless as you like, using whatever approach you choose.

So a protocol that provides the basis for user respecting apps with different approaches.

Goal: curation with zero effort via support for 'algos' that serve you rather than the other way around.

Use a personal / ?

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@eludom I believe in , not client servers. For me, servers are the core source of pain: vulnerabilities, centralisation etc

You are free to solve the issues you see the way you want, but it's pointless trying to get me to adopt your approach when it is based on incompatible beliefs.

Good luck.
