Thoughts I've not yet seen dilineated regarding : while I agree the concerns over data privacy & surveillance capitalism are moot (ActivityPub is an open protocol) the concerns regarding ethical compromise are not.

We should look for ways to support those who want to change for the better. That's part of progress. Those same folks need to stop causing active harm first though. Meta should be welcome if they first stop doing harm. Until then they should be ostracized on principle. No?

Face it, is a predatory and exploitative surveillance machine. Their activities ruin lives and make life awful across the globe.

It's on a par with the nazi bar.

Regardless whether defederating Meta will hamper their malicious growth (an instrumental argument), there's a clear moral argument too.

By pre-emptively defederating from , we can show that we don't want to be part of the new fancy nazi bar that'll open soon.

It doesn't matter how big a nazi bar is. It's a nazi bar.

I still haven't made up my mind about blocking Meta's #Threads, codenamed #Project92 or #P92, supposedly supporting #ActivityPub, should it actually launch. As far as I can see, it's basically "keeping the evil surveillance corp. out" vs "avoiding nerdy self-marginalization".

Both are fair points. I guess, it depends. But on what? For the, the key point is if the Threads (or whatever its name) support easy migration (as Mastodon does). If that's the case, I would prefer not to block it, as it could be an offramp from the walled garden. If this feature is omitted, then i would be much more open to blocking.

But in the end, this should not be a decision by the admins, but a collective one by the users of the instance. #fedipact #Project92

There is one legitimate reason to have attended the meeting of fediverse admins with Facebook/Meta and that’s if your goal was to leak the contents.

(We’re waiting.)

Personally, I don’t see how I can trust any fediverse admin either stupid enough or malleable enough to sign an NDA with Facebook/Meta.

No one made you sign an NDA with a surveillance capitalist that this space stands in diametric opposition to. You did that to yourselves. Don’t be surprised if there are consequences.

CUSTODIAN CLEANUP ANNOUNCEMENT

We have put an instance-wide silence on two fediverse fuckwads, @stux and @supernovae, because they, as operators of large instances, are being dicks to .art, a much smaller instance, and are doing so in ways that raises all sorts of red flags, as they try to avoid taking responsibility for their own actions, and try to frame .art as the aggressor instead.

This moderation action will persist until the heat death of the universe, or until they stop being assholes.

Receipts;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARVO

https://dotart.blog/dotart-blog/defederating-from-universeodon

oceane,

@custodian @stux @supernovae Where's the DARVO from supernovae? Which attack on the mastodon.art community or admin should be denied? We're just playing Facebook's game at the moment – timing their contact with large instance admins with the Reddit migration, when everyone's excited, and leveraging the dispositives of power they've developed, that Twitter has inherited from them and that Mastodon has inherited from Twitter, which is compensating an artificial scarcity in arguably the most abundant resource on the Earth, human attention, with an illusion of solidarity through dopamine shots – again, during a conceptual widening of actual internet-based solidarity through the Fediverse –, deciding (in a context of concurrence for this attention) who deserves to be in the group and who doesn't – thus the so-called “cancel culture”, which is just socio-capitalist media monetization of abuse, optimization for engagement, and here on the fediverse, instance defederations.

So far you've only achieved three things:

  1. split the fediverse and increase the likelihood of admin defect, due to pressure or burnout,
  2. cap the Reddit migration, since the beginning of this fedi drama, and
  3. sign a pact of preemptive defederation not just to protect your communities but also the fediverse from EEE with no education or experience with this process, as far as I've seen.

This blog post sheds some light on how it could work: https://www.timothychambers.net/2023/06/23/project-and-the.html

@denise I really wouldn't mind on the BUT I'm gonna need assurances first:

1: If Meta's system starts adding any kind of ads to the footers of posts of people on Threads, that's a no-go.

2: If I direct a comment to someone on Threads & see ANY kind of ad in a thread I started, that's also a no-go.

3: No profiling of my data from ActivityPub for use in Meta's systems.

Sounds fair, but Meta won't agree which is why we're reticent to deal w/them on the .

I think the thing that's annoying me most amount this fiasco is Meta seem to be trying to "enterprise" the fediverse. I.e. setting up meeting with a few popular instances to discuss it etc. It could even be seen as them trying to "manage" the fediverse.

personally, I have this picture in my mind of Meta's Fediverse Relationship and Guidance Manager (or some other pompous title) suited up in their "futuristic" office in a meeting surrounded by hundreds of fediverse representatives all using cat/fox/anime/etc. avatars ... and I think it's beautiful

Whatever your opinion on the stuff is, I want to make one thing clear —

If you're involved in contracts and/or managing accounts even a little, you'll probably already know that NDAs are signed early and signed often.

Potential collab.? NDA.

Vendor relationship? NDA.

Ask what their engineers had for lunch? You bet your ass that's an NDA.

So the fact that some signed NDAs with Meta is just a rather minor data point with little significance.

I piss off people who pander to and believe every server on the Fediverse should federate with (a.k.a., ) since, you know, notmeta.social won’t be doing that.

And I piss off the HOA of the Fediverse by suggesting we should have lobby servers that help Meta users migrate off of Meta.

But it’s fine if some people get upset. Not everyone will be happy in this situation.

strixy,

@tchambers Your article helped me understand better that federating with isn’t, in isolation, the biggest threat to be worried about. Thank you for that. However, the bigger issue for me is that is not going to participate in good faith. They will seek to compromise the largest instances and poison the community’s critical mass from within. What are the tools we have to collectively defend against that, beyond preemptive action, before it’s too late?
