RealVNC is ending their free Home plan but here are some alternatives for remote GUI desktop management
There is a RealVNC Lite alternative if you look carefully on their website, and that option may well still work for you after June. Unfortunately, RealVNC is pretty good and has excellent mobile clients, so it has long been a first option for many f ...continues
Say what you will about Microsoft (and this is Mastodon, so I know you will) (and frankly, you're usually not wrong), but Remote Desktop is a frickin' miracle.

Trying to set up #RemoteAccess on #Ubuntu to help my father with a computer issue. A few years back, an #XMPP account in the #GNOME instant messenger client #Empathy was enough, because it used a quite clever mechanism to set up a #RemoteDesktop connection. What’s the best way today? GNOME now supports RDP natively, but by default it seems to only support link local connections, not over internet? Do I really need TeamViewer for this?

Just listened to the latest BSD Now podcast, and I was thrilled to hear them discussing my recent blog post, "How to Create a FreeBSD Jail Hosting XRDP and XFCE for Remote Desktop Access." 😃 Always find BSD Now episodes so engaging!
HopToDesk is a free remote desktop tool allowing users to share their screen and allow remote control access to their computers and devices. Unlike other similar tools such as TeamViewer or AnyDesk, HopToDesk is free for both personal and business use, provides true end-to-end encryption for all peer communications, and open source.
@Linux_Is_Best weird, cuz #AMT-alike #RemoteAccess features are present in ALL #Intel and #AMD CPUs for quite some time and they literally allow #Sysadmins to #KVM onto a System's #UEFI remotely and even get #RemoteDesktop [abeid at garbage resolution] with a minimum of components.
This is literally on of the main reasons for professional Workstations and Laptops: Ease of Deployment and Maintenance for hundreds if not Thousands of Systems.
Maybe Dell requires some $$$ "System Manager" Software?
So I really want to be able to use Mesh Central to quickly help students out of a bind or stuff like that, like my coworkers can. So, they have web RDP, and places to enter login information. But I doubt it's gotten any more accessible. But the guys behind Mesh Central have moved to Microsoft, so maybe that'll all move to Quick Assist. I can dream. :) And no, my workplace does not have Remote Incident Manager. We don't even pay for Teamviewer or any kind of remote login thing. Hopefully one day we can just assign IP addresses to "quick" Quick Assist functions, kinda like a speed dial lol, and just quickly connect and get audio output. Like that's all I want, audio output, and keyboard input would be great too.
For those looking for an easy to use #remotedesktop solution that is #foss try RustDesk.
Its simple, stable, works well out of the box and its easy to #selfhost the intermediary server if you swing that way (which I do). The default version, using their servers, is free but with paid options for those that want more and want to support the development.
Found it after spending too long looking at full blown VNC corporate solutions to fix a local family problem. 😅️
