Dear #webDev

Who are your favorite #Web #educators and #developers who have stopped posting to Twitter? People who support #diversity and #openness in the #webDevelopment community on the #Fediverse instead of chasing engagement on a hate-site?

I want to #boost them!!!

I found the borders between what should be part of IaC and what should be a service deployment operations to be somewhat blurred yet.

Although I think containers are probably here to stay (in likely a even more "invisible" format), the whole orchestration system is too complex and still looking for itself, just like serverless.

, at the time it was developed mainly for smartphones, had this rather simple approach of “give me your logins, I’ll build a unified local stream of all your interactions on social networks” and I sometimes think it’s time to bring that concept back. but with translators/connectors where needed. . Locally on your device.

So now people are questioning Serverless.

I have mainly created monoliths as a full stack dev.

I am trying to get into serverless, but now this 👇🏼

Pushpin decomposes real time web technologies (like into a request/response backend which works really well for and honestly most application stacks. Long lived connections are hard to manage near your app logic.

The GRIP protocol is straightforward and lower level than you'd expect.

Good read so far.

#FleekNetwork is making progress on their testnet rollout: https://blog.fleek.network/post/fleek-network-testnet-plans/

This company called has been offering a "deploy to IPFS" platform called https://fleek.xyz

They have recently released the for which not only has but also decentralized edge CDN.

Most exciting of all is that they have a concept that seems to allow for running your code on other people's nodes and getting a guarantee that the work was done!

No more ! !

TIL that when you manage Step Functions using or , you have no control over JobDefinition revisions. So whenever you change a job definition, CloudFormation creates a new revision for it and inactivates the previously active one.

So in practice, when you update a StepFunctions job definition any existing long-running executions that depended on the old version will simply fail. And waste a ton of resources and potentially money.

Depressed to see CDK folks were already aware of this in August 2020, and it didn't seem relevant enough to AWS to have been fixed since then: https://github.com/aws/aws-cdk/issues/9144#issuecomment-681081310

This sort of problem is exactly what turns some engineering leaders off of for other architectures.

In particular, I wish AWS would spend more energy into making CloudFormation support better across the board. Like requiring support for new services and ensuring a minimum resource coverage as part of service teams' goals. Because it doesn't look like this is the case today. Something many people like @Quinnypig have been screaming (in the cloud) about for ages now.

Sorry for the rant. I like AWS and serverless, but this boiled my blood today because it had non-trivial impact into my operations and cost and took the team quite a while to figure out. Now we'll have to figure out an ugly workaround to implement. 🙄

Tip: if you're using Apache2 server on Debian, you should place your .cgi files under /usr/lib/cgi-bin. Don't forget to do a chmod +x my_script.cgi before hitting the path /cgi-bin/my_script.cgi on your web server.

I'm getting so spoiled by #serverless and I am sick of docker containers.

I love the local dev experience of https://arc.codes it would be awesome to build something large scale with it!
