For Europeans wanting to remove their data from , wouldn't a GDPR deletion request do the trick? I wish we had real data privacy laws in my country.

Maybe hot take?

This sucks and should never have embraced generative AI. But also don't go removing existing answers because you don't like the policy because that sucks too.

LLMs looting the internet will lead to a significant increase in insularity, barriers to entry, suspicion, and siloing by its users.

Expect to see an increase in invite-only forums and communities which vet everyone who applies for access to make sure they aren’t a scraper in a human suit. An increase in experts refusing to help newbies, for fear of their help being copied, mulched, and resold by massive corporations. A decrease in the “social” part of the net.

Just came up with a new analogy I'm rather proud of: LLMs are digital compost heaps. They decompose whatever you hurl in and turn it into artificial excrement.

Also I'm moving from StackExchange to Codidact. If I'm going to do any more unpaid labour it's going to be for a not-for-profit, rather than a for-profit company. Feeding that work into a digital compost heap is the push I needed.

Taking a scorched earth policy whenever a platform does a deal with an AI developer is not a good way to maintain and build a thriving commons.

i wonder what the thinking is, for to sell their data to

on the one hand, it feels a lot like the company is being stripped for parts. on the other, openai was probably doing it anyway, so now at least they get paid for it

either way, this seems like a new era

Plenty of toxicity in tech was front and center on SO answers.

I was working on a problem today where I needed to pick out a department and a sub issue that were attached to each other as a single code in a comment.

I first went to use the traditional SUSTRING(comment_string, 1, 5) IN (my list of codes) but it was slow.

So off to work, I learned something new via and learned to make a sarge-able LIKE with what ever I want in the narrower results.

Nice to learn something new.

I like how 15 years ago, a question on StackOverFlow would get 3k upvotes, 21 answers (with even more upvotes),
and all be "How do I copy a file in Python?"
Today, you'll need to be very specific and watch for 10 other questions that remind of yours and be marked as a copy question.

Huh. Apparently staff/moderators can and do stealth-edit user comments now. Who the fuck thought this was OK?!

That’s a huge breach of trust. Maybe it’s time to stop using the website entirely.

(“stealth edit” = edit without raising a notification to the user, and without making it visible that the comment was edited by anybody else.)

SEqlite's for you! It's the info from the dumps you probably care about, preprocessed into SQLite databases with indexes.

Alright, so many companies are using user or customer data for training without consent that I think I'm going to have to make an ongoing thread to document them all. 🤖

Here we go! 1/x

Starting out with who have sold user data to another company, that will use it to train AI:
