"Several people were killed in alleged Israeli airstrikes outside of #Aleppo, Syria’s defense ministry said early Monday. According to reports, the attack targeted a copper plant in the town of Hayyan, north of Aleppo in northern #Syria. Video purporting to show the aftermath of the apparent strike showed large flames shooting out of a building
Probably the most cynical but also widespread manipulation is when #Hamas supporters post photos from #Syria presenting them as photos from #Gaza and #Palestine. Which is quite popular trick, because Assad’s merciless war on Syrian civilians produced thousands of dramatic photos of ruined towns and people bombed, executed or poisoned with chemical weapons. If you search for “killed Arab civilians” to feed your daily posting schedule, you will mostly find photos from Syria. Most absurdly, people like Jackson Hinkle support Assad and Russia and condemn killing of Arabs in Palestine at the same time…
I have given a clear example of a specific person posting a proven fake… but you still “see it” as “undermining” Gaza? Well, that’s a problem with your perception, not mine.
⚠️ Confirmed: #Syria has imposed a nationwide internet blackout this morning as a countermeasure against cheating and paper leaks in school exams, joining Iraq and a handful of other countries who implement this disruptive policy; incident duration ~5 hours
@b9AcE Great point, noted! We usually qualify claimed rationales with wording like ‘purportedly’ though sometimes it slips through with these tedious cases. And indeed, exam shutdowns have coincided with protests in past so there can be more at play.
@netblocks Very good.
I guess it is easier to notice when something is missing that one thinks should be there, than to notice all the many times more occurrences of what you think should be there also being there. ;-)
The Syrian civil war has gone on for more than 13 years.
"The war whose brutality once dominated headlines has settled into an uncomfortable stalemate. Hopes for regime change have largely died out, peace talks have been fruitless, and some regional governments are reconsidering their opposition to engaging with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. The government has regained control of most of the country, and Assad's hold on power seems secure"
So that you know, this video posted today by #SyrianGirl account with description “Yemen Houthi forces Score a direct hit in US destroyer” gained nearly 700k views, 2.3k shares and 7k likes… and it’s entirely false.
Users quickly identified the original as 2013 video from Norway naval exercise. The “Syrian Girl” account only added some subtitles in Arabic.
The account has been posting such fakes for years, starting from inventing incredible conspiracy theories to discredit the official OPCW investigation into #Assad chemical attacks against civilians in #Syria and then every single fake, mostly produced in #Russia.
rule of thumb: every time a «usa-hater» posts a «revelation», be very, very doubtful, ideally just ignore (and block); 99% of the time those end up being #russian-sponsored lies.
