Mastodon.
I have a WordPress blog and I just received an email telling me this:
From April 30, 2023 you will no longer be able to share your #WordPress.com posts automatically to #Twitter using Jetpack Social.
Twitter decided, on short notice, to dramatically change the terms and pricing of the #TwitterAPI. We have attempted to work with Twitter in good faith to negotiate new terms, but we have not been able to reach an agreement. As a result, we will need to remove the functionality.
#Wordpress hat angekündigt eine auto-share Funktion für #Mastodon zu implementieren, nachdem diese Funktion für #Twitter abgeschaltet wird, weil Musk spinnt.
#WordPress plugins that inject their own update notification banners/UIs into the top of every page in the WordPress admin are the most annoying things ever.
It should be a requirement of listing your plugin on wordpress.org that your plugin doesn't do this.
Automattic’s #Jetpack plugin drops auto-sharing of your #WordPress posts to Twitter because of Twitter’s changes to their API and pricing.
> We have attempted to work with Twitter in good faith to negotiate new terms..
.. but.. no!
Good to see that #Mastodon support will be coming soon:
> In addition, you can still auto-share your posts to Tumblr, Facebook, and Linkedin. In the near future, we are adding the ability to auto-share to Instagram and Mastodon.
I’m experimenting with the #ActivityPub plug-in in my #Wordpress blog, which allows anyone interested in following my blog posts, to do it directly by following its own Mastodon account. I think of it as an alternate means to using RSS feeds (which the blog also has available).
Keep in mind what I post here at @daniel is different from what I post in my blog.
I saw this while browsing the wordpress hashtag and was reminded of the massively increasing problem of Internet sustainability. We tend to only think about crypto mining, streaming media or AI generative tools but slow, inefficient websites contribute to this too. Let's make more effective, fast, simpler websites that do the job of information delivery and findability. #sustywp#wordpress#carbonfootprint#webdev

Poked my head into Mastodon quickly, still people ranting about Bluesky.
Again: if you want to make Mastodon more welcome to people and have everyone here, it needs to get easier to use and add features people need (working replies, working search, quote posts, better discoverability of interesting posts).
After doing a little bit of investigating, it looks like the easiest, cheapest way of adding a news feed to our "What Works" website is to reactivate our Twitter account. Doing it through Mastodon would require more money so we could install the Mastodon plug-in — or switching to a hosting service, which isn't as cheap as I had assumed and comes with a learning curve. Thoughts?
A warm day in SF. A lot of people enjoying the back patio at Haus Coffee on 24th.
I’m editing two exciting episodes of Press This today. One with Brian Gardner about the Frost theme for #WordPress and the other is an interview with Devin Walker from GiveWP and iThemes about “rebranding in public”.
Both of these interviews were really interesting and I can’t wait to share them.
With combined relief and light sadness I have informed our staff today that I will not be attending WordCamp Europe 2023. I've been feeling fatigue for while now and will take some distance from the WordPress events and travelling in general (for the record, I hate all kinds of travelling and social gatherings, as much as I try to enjoy it, it's really causing my anxiety spike).
I've always considered more about our team rather than myself. This year I'll think about my own well being. I will take that week to be with my family. The war doesn't need one man. I'm sure my team will enjoy the trip despite this. See you perhaps at #WCEU 2024. Have fun in Athens this summer everyone!
Just a friendly reminder https://wpfront.page is going strong. Visit a couple of times a week and pretend it’s your morning #WordPress newspaper catching you up on the important stuff quickly.
I have an open spot for NEXT WEEK if you want to talk about YOUR top 3-4 WordPress moments on a 90 minute podcast w/ a panel of other folks. To be released around May 27th.
DM me here (or Post Status Slack) only if interested (there are only certain windows open). Probably by Monday we will fill up.
I was thinking earlier that it would be pretty cool to have an #ActivityPub-powered app that uses something like the old #WordPress#PostFormats feature that, in turn, supports post formats that other #Fediverse services use.
For example, the app can post regular posts like this one, structured link posts that work with services like #Lemmy, galleries through @pixelfed and videos through #Peertube.
Unless #ActivityPub automatically reformats posts based on what they contain when a user of services like these receives them in their feeds? I'm not sure how this works under the metaphorical hood. 🤔
@starrymom Looks great! Still waiting for my templated personal #wordpress website to come online. #cloudflare is on day 4 of transferring my domain from Gandi.
