Advice Needed: Thinking about moving from just because the text editor is barely functional. I'm not the biggest fan of I just find the UI too confusing and has a tonne of options that I'll never need.

Looking into and but am open to other options. I just need a basic text writer and maybe the ability to put the odd image in.

If anyone has some advice then, I'm ears.

Here's my current blog for reference - https://mickbirchallreview.blogspot.com/

question here… What is the best, free duplicate post/page plugin out there? I am not looking for any fancy features, just something that simply duplicates the post/page as is.

Really just not looking to manually copy and paste the content.

My report after a few hours using Bluesky.

http://scripting.com/2023/05/08.html#a123946

azizhp,

@davew I don't think can catch up to as a "global townhall" or a and I think is more likely to be a challenge long term to Twitter solely because of the Right People gravitating there, along with Founder cred.

But I'm casting my lot with . Especially .i want to return to the blogsphere of old rather than social media silos and I think we have the tools for this now.

The best way to explain is to imagine what would happen if (pre-Elon) fell in love with and they had a baby.

That baby would be Calckey.

Twitter + WordPress = Calckey

Let me explain... 🧵

atomicpoet, (edited )

So like , has a timeline feed. Multiple timeline feeds, in fact:

  1. Home
  2. Local
  3. Social
  4. Recommended
  5. Global

It's got more feeds than Twitter. And you can make more of them through lists and antennas!

But Calckey is also like in that it has:

  1. Cloud storage
  2. Galleries
  3. Widgets
  4. Plug-ins
  5. Webpages

You can customize the look and feel. And, like WordPress, there's lots of wonderful admin tools!

Twitter + WordPress = Calckey

atomicpoet, (edited )

Now this is how gets more WordPress-like because -- just like -- everyone who has a Calckey account can customize their theme.

And by customize, I don't merely mean select from a predetermined set of themes.

Nor do I just mean you can install one.

You can make your own Calckey theme!

You can make a Calckey theme both from a colour picker or through code!

This is very much like WordPress.

atomicpoet,

Another way is like : widgets!

That's right, you can add your own widgets to Calckey's dashboard.

As you can see in this dashboard, there's quite a few to choose from:

  • Sticky notes
  • Notifications
  • Calendar
  • User list
  • RSS reader

And much, much more!

Calckey is definitely for microblogging -- but it's also kind of a CMS too!

atomicpoet, (edited )

Another way is similar to is the cloud storage options.

Yes, like , Calckey can store photos and videos.

But like WordPress, Calckey can also host documents, audio, and even zip files on your drive!

How cool is that?

See screenshot.

@tim ... I'm trying to get activitypub working on my blog and I'm getting issues with webfinger and loop backs. I am self hosting so in control of everything, but haven't got a clue where to start. I'm using cloudflare CDN with aggressive custom caching rules so I be suspect that might be part of the problem.

Have you got some links I can use to troubleshoot? I remember you also had some caching issues.

tim,

@chrisshaw ah, yeah, if you are using with aggressive caching you are more than likely going to have an issue with on your site working right. Currently Cloudflare doesn't properly respect the need to serve HTML to normal visitors and JSON to ActivityPub requests. Here are a couple of resources from @dustinrue that will be helpful:

@jasontucker is also another person that has had challenges with Cloudflare.

🔐 WP-WebAuthn – Passkey on WordPress

With Google recently announcing “The beginning of the end of the password” I started thinking about and what plugins are available that allow for support for . Using only your username you can use the passkey system to use your computer or mobile device to perform the rest of the login sequence.

I'm looking for a simple Cache plugin but after staring at the dozens of available candidates, I must admit I have no idea where to turn. I don't need an All-in-One SEO/PageSpeed/etc..., I just need a simple server-side cache that I can set up and forget. Memcached support is a plus as it's already available on my machine.

Any recommendation?

Should I apply as speaker to upcoming WordCamp Finland?

Perhaps for the first time I would talk in English, before I've talked in Finnish for some reason.

I know a thing or two in following topics:

  • theming
  • Entrepreneurship, running a digital agency
  • Content
  • Devops
  • Gutenberg
  • Hosting
  • Marketing
  • Mental health
  • Open source
  • Site performance
  • UI/UX

I'm not sure about my energy right now and should decide in mere days. What do you think?

Question.

I currently use a free dot com site because I am lazy and don't really want to spend any money on a blog that, let's be honest, no one really cares much about (which includes me most of the time).

But I'm wondering if I should try to make a dot org site. I just don't know anything about, well anything. Any suggestions for doing so on the cheap (is bluehost really the best bet for hosting?) or about doing any of this because I don't know what I'm doing.

I'm many kinds of writer - novelist, journalist, activist, editorialist, screenwriter - but at core, I'm a . Every bit of interesting stuff that crosses my path gets turned into a blog post, which gets lodged in both a database and my mind, where it rubs up against other interesting stuff and crystallizes into longer, more considered pieces:

Anyone help with a question?
Installing a plugin on my self hosted Wordpress site and it keeps baulking and saying 2 directories do not have the required 644 write permission set.
But they do.
It's for SSL certificate and the path is /var/www/ssl/ with the 2 directories in question being within the ssl directory and called 'keys' and 'certs'.
I am am stuck.
Do I need to make all the parent directories 644 too?? All I can think of but then might that affect 'other things'? 😜

Many here have been pushing the idea that has been neglected for far too long. I tend to agree.
If you're a user, here's a plugin you should try: Friends by @alex described by @pfefferle as "A federated network based on RSS!".
It doesn't use , but can be "enhanced" by it.

So far, I've installed on both blogs:
Main blog https://www.didiermary.fr/friends/
African Music Forum https://amf.didiermary.fr/friends/

I'm exploring the various options. If interested you should too. Let's connect!

I recently switched the spam filter on @blendernation from to the free Antispam Bee and it works like a charm. Added privacy bonus: ASB runs locally and sends no data to some cloud service.
