When Bing, Microsoft’s search engine platform, went down early yesterday, it took down a number of services with it, including ChatGPT search, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo — all of which rely on the Bing API to operate.
With the majority of Google search alternatives taken out in one fell swoop, it highlighted the lack of competition that Google search truly has, and the implications that has on our online experience. Is there another way? @arstechnica has more.
☝️ Yes, the #Internet was not broken yesterday, only #Bing from #Microsoft and therefore these so-called alternatives, which apparently resist #Google. You should expand your naive belief and behaviour via #SearXNG, @Mojeek and/or #Stract search. You can find it by #search'ing for the corresponding hashtags in #Fediverse.
Folks, I know… I use Duck Duck Go also but remember they have venture capital. Enjoy it while it lasts (or let’s fund and build alternatives differently that aren’t temporary businesses with profit motives and exits but commons-owned institutions working for the common good).
So it seems that #DuckDuckGo was down for the last few hours because of a #Bing outage. That's very annoying; DDG should probably get out from under Microsoft's coat tails...
Between the speech given where #Microsoft literally want to cloud base Windows (calling it Windows 365), the #AI "Callback" wife beater tool and #Bing AI eating the Bing API for half a day today almost the entire W11 subreddit seems up in arms. I have never seen so many "I am switching to #Linux" and "I am saving up for a #Mac" comments as today.
Bing and related search engines crashed today, because @Techaltar plugged Ecosia so hard in today's video, causing millions to suddenly switch, true story.
While #DuckDuckGo is down, I tried out a few other search engines. I did a search I made yesterday in each. #Bing gave me an interesting looking blog first, then some less-related info from high-trust sources, then an interesting paper, then a bunch of garbage. #Mojeek gave me nothing that looked interesting, just pages that used some of the words from my search. #Kagi gave me the less-related high-trust sources first, then the entire rest of the first page looked interesting.
Gah, had no idea that #DuckDuckGo was using #Bing as a backend. My strict "no-Microsoft" policy means that I've now got to find another search engine...
