This is a lovely (planted) wild meadow behind my gym in that's already brimming with wild bees at 5:30 in the morning.

The hedgehog cacti are finally starting to bloom. The prickly pear too: these prickly pears more often have yellow flowers, and I don't know what makes them sometimes orange instead.

is used proactively to create & restore wildflower meadows, where it aids by suppressing dominant grasses & recycling of nutrients. This improves chances of other species of wildflowers becoming established.

Guilty pleasure: not native to Interior Alaska, but I love the smell of the chokecherry trees this time of year.

We have a viola refuge in our garden. It is next to the south side of our woodshed. The ground is covered with rocks we picked out of the garden and tossed over here. This spot gets zero care from us and is hot with sun radiating off the woodshed wall. The viola have self-seeded and are claiming this spot for their own. #BloomScrolling #PNW

Continue to fight a losing battle with sawfly utterly decimating my rose foliage (unpictured), but at least the blooms are nice. First of the year.

I can't usually see the tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera aka tulip poplar) blossoms because they're so high up in the trees. But this one fell down, probably knocked off by a greedy squirrel (they like to nibble the blossoms and lick the nectar out of the center). So pretty!

The lizard orchids, Himantoglossum hircinum, are in full bloom along the bike trail. All the wild orchids seem to be. SW France.

I have always fancied columbine. I'm a sucker for new varieties I see at nurseries. These and a couple of others have naturalized at my place.

On Memorial Day, I took a day off from the garden to visit one of the most famous spots in the Cascade range (Washington State) for plant geeks. It's called Perry Creek, about 90 minutes NE of Seattle. A unique coincidence of topography and weather patterns allows about 250 species of native plants to thrive in a small valley. It has a special protected status under the National Forest Service. A meandering plant photo thread.

Mountain valley, cloudy misty day. A pyramidal peak, snow capped, dominates the horizon. Wooded slopes frame either side of the picture and a trail leads through very mossy rocks into the distance towards the peak.
Trail leading beneath maple trees off into the distance toward the mountain. Moss hangs in curtains from maple branches and more moss blankets the stones I. Either side of the trail. Dappled afternoon sunlight peeks through the trees.

Perry Creek plant safari cont'd. Now for some plants I can't identify....Photo 1 & 2: this is obviously a fern but as it's barely unfurling I can't tell which. Lovely nonetheless. Lady fern perhaps? Photos 3 & 4: This flower is a real stumper. Notice the variegated foliage. At first I thought it was foam flower but that little yellow flower is not right for that. Anyone recognize it?

A second view of the same plants.
A very small plant on the forest floor. The foliage is deeply dissected and variegated with a dark pattern splashed across the basal area of each leaf.
A second view of the same plant with a very tiny yellow flower in the center. It is shaped like a star.
