Last night's Full Super Blue Moon was fantastic (even with a light plume of smoke blowing in from Canada).

There is a chance the full moon will actually appear blue, according to NASA

The Blue Moon will rise on the night of August 30, 9:35 pm EDT, according to the US Naval Observatory https://moon.nasa.gov/news/196/the-next-full-moon-is-a-supermoon-the-sturgeon-moon/

The Next Full Moon is a Supermoon, a Blue Moon, and Rakhi Purnima.

“The older definition of Blue Moon, dating back to at least the 1500s, is the name for the third full Moon in a season that has four Moons. […] Neither of these definitions has anything to do with the color of the Moon, so the Blue Moon will not actually look blue.”

Absolutely incredible moonrise for the blue moon/supermoon combo tonight. I went out to Cape Saunders on the Otago Peninsula and boy was I glad I did! Here's a picture taken at 6:08:49 when technically the moon was at very low altitude (much less than a degree) and WOW OH WOW look at the refraction effects as the moon rises over the Ocean.

Full moon occurs at 1:35 pm today. As it is the 2nd full moon of August 2023, some people call it a "blue" moon. Full moon is 9 hours after lunar perigee (the moon's closest approach to Earth). With "only" 357,344 km twixt Earth and moon, this is the closest full moon of 2023. Because of the moon's proximity, some people call it a "supermoon". I've just watched it set over Saddle Hill here in New Zealand

This month's second full moon (a blue moon) occurs at 1:35 pm today. The event occurs just nine hours after the lunar perigee, the name given to the moon's nearest approach to Earth. I did the math.

I’ll almost certainly be dead, lol.

I've found something else I'm no good at photographing: the moon.

The 1st image shows some details of the moon. Everything else is underexposed and utterly dark.

The 2nd image shows improved exposure around the moon, with some surrounding detail. But the moon is so overexposed, it looks like the sun.

How do you get the best of both worlds without combining images, or manipulating things with an editor?

A nomenclature of 'Blue Moon' almost never means a Moon of a blue color but with the summer nights, a literally blue appearing Moon, or Moon in the daytime is a fun one to spot. The northern hemisphere was showing off a bit before sunset, and with the May 23 full Moon so close I couldn't resist a few pictures. Happy lunar viewing!
