A-ha, overnight (for me) what used to be #Calckey did their major release and rebranding to #Firefish. Looks very tidy, and carries a lot of features many of us have been missing.
It is, of course, a fedi server alternative to Mastodon. Unlike Mastodon, it allows importing your post history if you move from another server, as well as your followers and follows. Worth a peek, whether you're a user or a would-be admin.
calckey rebranding has never been a top priority of the calckey community > there has never been any poll on that matter, much less so regarding the project's new name firefish
calckey dev team is not so much about building a community, but it increasingly resembles a sect or a cult #calckey#rebranding#firefish
the cult is cutting off its very own roots instead of being proud of what has been achieved while sailing under the old moniker calckey - they have even deleted the project name calckey from the intro blog post on calckey.org which dates back to 26/03/2023, when calckey.org was launched #calckey#rebranding#firefish
Does drive on #calckey / #firefish apply for everything a user uploads including posts, or is this limited to images and video. Is it like something like Google Drive storage but for the instance?
I don't mind #Firefish as the new name for #Calckey - but I have to say that when I first read it I thought of #Firefox - as many in this Lemmy thread have - and seeing the new logo & colour I can't help but wonder if Mozilla will push back as part of their active protection of their trademark, a point @leigh makes. https://beehaw.org/post/6709040
Pro Tip, if your dealing with lag on Calckey/Firefish when using a Firefox based browser go to about:config and disable backdrop-filter, speeds up websites including Firefish!
@atomicpoet#Firefish is an terrific new name for #Calckey and big kudos to whoever designed the logo and the team of people who guided that difficult and hopefully not too contentious decision. The logo and naming checks off all the good branding decision boxes for me.
I would be willing to try #firefish (formerly #calckey) again at some point, but it was a deal breaker for me that the federation (or defederation, more like) status of servers are not publicly available.
For #ActivityPub to be understandable and for clients to trust server admins, these types of decisions should always be made public whenever they are made -- preferably with reasoning as well. Otherwise, users are left in the dark and won't understand why they can't see a profile / post.
I'm kind of tempted to find a games related instance to join that doesn't use Mastodon & instead uses Misskey or Calckey/Firefish as some of their features appeal to me more.
I just need to dig around and see which instances might click with me, which is always the trick in this space.
Calckey is making some big moves today, first rebranding as Firefish with a new logo, resetting their version to 1.0, and adding some interesting new features. As a Fediverse first, all Calckey.social users will be migrated to Firefish.social automatically. Not sure how that last bit will work, but we will find out soon!
I actually like #Calckey a ton. The only thing that kept me from using it as my main fediverse account is that you can't follow hashtags in your main feed.
Maybe that will be addressed in the update today...?
one disadvantage with activitypub is that accounts are not fully portable. what does migration mean in this chart? user posts, account details, medias can all be moved between software?
Today would be a good day to follow @kainoa — they’re announcing the new version and brand of Calckey today. Calckey is a flavor of ActivityPub server similar to Mastodon. I’m super curious about the announcement! #calckey#mastodon#activitypub#fediverse
See people switching to #calckey / #firefish and it sounds nice but I've decided I really want my next instance to be democratically governed - so I'd appreciate any tips on that!
