It took me 3 times as long as usual to get home from work today due to #StormHenk.
One of the major roads in #Norfolk, A47 was flooded in several places and I had to take the back roads and hope for the best…trying to remember which villages are on higher ground in this county is tricky as it’s very flat!
But it made me realise #ClimateBreakdown is here in the UK and impacting us right now…this is just the start.
There are voters out there switching from #Tories to Green Party…we’ve seen that happen at a county level in Norfolk.
#Sunak has taken his rural, nature loving older core vote for granted and they are disgusted at the state of our rivers and fearful of what may come for their children with #ClimateBreakdown.
The writing is on the wall for Tories and they won’t vote Labour.
Before everyone starts dissing #EVs and celebrating the #BMW's iX5 Hydrogen, believing that #cars are going to run on pure #water tomorrow, remember that the 2 primary methods of producing #hydrogen at scale are steam #methane reformation & autothermal reforming using oxygen and #CO2. From 'blue' (as aforementioned) to 'pink' or 'yellow', all production methods hide under the unicorn #green method, hurling us towards total #climatebreakdown.
“I can’t get people to bat an eyelash. It’s like there’s something wrong with our brains that we can’t understand just how grave this situation is.”
“I think the right to a healthy environment is actually the foundation that we require to enjoy all other human rights. If we don’t have a living, healthy planet Earth, then all the other rights are just words on paper.”
David Boyd, who served as UN special rapporteur on human rights and the environment from 2018 to April 2024
Turning some #degrowth preconceptions on their head? Surviving #ClimateBreakdown won't be about seizing control of an unsustainable system
"The historically unique situation we are now in presents us with the need for a non-confrontational strategy, one that involves turning away and ‘ignoring capitalism to death’. (This does not deny the need to confront over specific threats, such as to log a forest.)" https://medium.com/postgrowth/a-friendly-critique-of-the-degrowth-movement-f0bd2297072d
““Stop with your protesting nonsense about how ‘the world is becoming uninhabitable’, and learn to live with it, peasants.
Evolve faster.”
The next front in climate change argument, now that ‘denial’ is no longer an option… “
#Norfolk is largely in complete denial about the impact of #climatebreakdown and the speed with which it is happening, despite it being predicted to be one of the counties in the UK to be worst hit.
Here’s just one example of this…building new homes just a matter of metres from an already rapidly eroding coastline:
Exxon is the largest oil company in the US and has been accused of purposely misleading the public about the threat of climate change. It spent more than $37m funding groups promoting climate denial in the US between 1997 and 2008.
Labour leader Keir Starmer calls action to prevent the deaths of 4000 people a year in London ‘very wrong’ after Ulez-linked Uxbridge election loss #climatebreakdown#LeadershipFail
The repeated climate-driven disasters have started to tear at the fabric of American life this year, with state and federal authorities scrambling to deal with displaced people and major insurers deciding to pull out of California and parts of Florida due to the mounting costs of covering homes menaced by fire and floods.
"The scientific evidence is stark that reducing #inequality is a fundamental precondition for addressing the #environmental, #health and social crises the world is facing. It’s essential that policymakers act quickly to reverse decades of rising inequality and curb the highest incomes."https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-00723-3
“What astonishes me is that the oil and gas industry makes apparently no effort to get on the right side of history. They’re just flaunting their profits in front of everyone without any sensitivity to the impact of that.”
“These unprecedented profits are not being put to the use of humanity. They are being put to the use of the industry and its shareholders – a very tiny little portion of humanity. I am actually outraged that that is the choice that they have been making.”
The oil and gas industry has made an average of $1tn a year in pure profit for the past 50 years.
How long will we be able to hold back the impact of #ClimateBreakdown ?
Visited the #Norfolk seaside today and walked from Cromer to Overstrand. This is not the worst impacted section of our coast by any means, in terms of coastal erosion or rising sea levels, but the evidence of the tension was there nonetheless.
