Since the temporary ferry terminal walkway went down last week I've been checking in on this one former support column, because:
This is the last standing piece of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
That's why it's where it is and why the new lanes bend around it but in a way that is clearly temporary. The asphalt sections will become large planters once that last viaduct piece goes down and they can relocate the lanes to their final intended locations.
And now that the new overhead walkway is open, they'll actually be able to do that soon.
If they ever need to take the old viaduct out of storage in the Battery Street Tunnel and put it back together it'll be missing a piece xD
US architecture firm Inform Studio and Buro Happold designed a curved and stepped wood-covered pedestrian bridge to link two parks in Providence, Rhode Island.
To make this happen they removed the I-195 highway from downtown. The bridge was floated 12 miles into place.
My friends are not going to believe this, I even can hardly believe it. By chance I am out for the night in Tempe, sharing a hotel room with a friend who drove here from out of town. 3 caregivers covering for me and everyone said “Go!” 1st time away since February 8. Btw it did NOT rain. Yes it was 115° again. Maybe I’ll post a few more photos tonight. Happy happy! #Tempe#Arizona#Downtown
Fort Wayne, IN is really interesting and has been making some cool changes over the last few years in #downtown.
This is Columbia Street, which has been closed off to motor vehicles. This intersection has been raised to sidewalk level, forcing drivers to slow down.
Fort Wayne has also brought in rental bikes and scooters, as well as more bike lanes (although they aren't protected) and bike trails.
Another reminder that urban density & lush street trees creating a “Kissing Canopy” over the sidewalk and street are completely compatible. It’s actually PART of #DensityDoneWell. You just have to make it a actual design priority. As this very dense block in my downtown #Vancouver neighbourhood illustrates.
