Don't miss: helmets and armbands from PBOT, but still not a connected bike network to ride home on #pdxBikes 😞 "Southwest Neighborhood Bike Fair is a free, family-friendly event that includes biking lessons for children, learn-to-ride coaching for adults, quick-fix bike repair, and e-bike demos. Hosted in partnership with the Mittleman Jewish Community Center and Community Cycling Center.
Sunday, July 23 from 9:00 am to noon at MJCC https://bit.ly/swbikefair ."

Yes, #eBike demos will get people out of cars. But when you're the authority having jurisdiction over the streets, you could nudge a little harder. Maybe try not squandering the entire #transportation budget and wasting everyone's time with your obsession over shuffling more cars to the next red light. 🤷

People who say they need a car because it rains sometimes, have you tried just carrying an umbrella or dressing your as one? I just rode a 1.5 miles round trip to pickup the kid from school, and my shoes were completely dry the whole time. Keep the DOTs' filthy road water off of you and getting slightly sprinkled with rain is fine.

Another great afternoon at Beics Ogwen a community bike workshop. Ian was teaching a member how to press fit new bearings whilst I serviced an older Marin and worked on a mid motor Trek conversion.

Pile of bikes awaiting parts.

E-cars were 9% of car sales in 2022, and the e-car fleet was under 17 million worldwide.

E-bike sales were at 275 million.

Politicians and policy-makers, stop ignoring e-bikes. https://www.treehugger.com/stop-ignoring-ebikes-5324307

There's a really good community feature on here called groups. It works like this:

  1. Follow a group's account
  2. You will start seeing posts on that topic
  3. You can post to the group by @-ing it

It's more powerful than hashtag following, as all group posts are actively pushed to all of the group's members. No one misses anything.

Find out more about groups at https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/

If you're interested, try following one of the friendly active groups curated at https://fedi.directory/tag/fediverse-groups/

@feditips @tea and what about an #ebikes #ebike group?

Looking for recommendations by for my short wife. She’s 4’10” (on a tall day she says), and is looking for something to get her around the city.

A lot of e-bikes tend to be big, heavy clunkers with big batteries. I’ve been looking at the vectron, c series, boomerang, and a few other folding and micro bikes.

Anything else I should be looking at? Bonus if available near .

I’m shook.

Just rode an for the first time. I’ve been intrigued for a while, but figured I would stick with human power for as long as my legs could turn unassisted.

This ride was so much fun and gave me a completely different experience of urban mobility. Only traveled a few miles—from Capitol Hill to Dupont Circle—but it was like being a kid again. Best two-wheeled experience in ages. Face hurts from smiling.

Sometimes people see the solar panel on my trike and say something about wanting a car. Let me just run the numbers here, just off the top of my head:

My - a big cargo tricycle - weighs a few hundred pounds (including me and whatever I'm carrying) and travels 10-15mph. I can go around 50 miles/day if it's sunny, and maintain a steady charge entirely from solar power.

A car probably weighs about 10x that and travels an average of 4x as fast.

Also, I usually provide around 50% of my trike's power by pedaling, which you don't get in a car.

So you'll need 10x4x2x the amount of solar panels I have on the trike to keep your car going at normal car speeds for 50 miles per day, which means 80x the solar panel area I have on the trike. If you only need to go 25 miles most days, you could get away with 40x the solar panels.

My trike's solar panel is about 3x4 feet (12sqft). Our hypothetical solar car is going to need between 480 and 960sqft of solar panels. At about 6 feet wide for an average car, that means your car needs to be 80 to 160 feet long. The average car is around 15 feet long. Our hypothetical solar car could be half the length of some city blocks.

Carrying enough solar panels to keep a car charged is somewhere between "difficult engineering challenge" and "downright absurd".

This isn't just about the implausibility of solar cars; it's about the absurdity of car design in general. Cars use an enormous amount of power for what they do. Electric cars may be an improvement over gas cars, but they are still incredibly inefficient.

This is (part of) why we need safe and routes, why we need good , why we need all kinds of and .

(I say "part of" because here's a whole other essay to write about the safety of a vehicle that's so heavy and so fast, but I'll save it for another day.)

After a couple of rides and a recent visit to have Grey checked (where I asked the vendor to ride it with at zero to see if he too has a hard time pedaling)...

Grey ⚫🚲 is no good without 🔋 power, unlike Big Bike ⚪🚲 that rides like any regular non-powered .

vs

Sad. But good to know.
I thought I was the problem! 😅

It'll still be good for casual city riding and 1 particular yearly long group ride. 😉

Another difference -- though it has nothing to do with them being -- are the brakes. No big deal.

⚪🚲
Front brake, right lever
Rear brake, left lever

⚫🚲
Front brake, left lever
Rear brake, right lever

I don't understand why the world can't just decide on one standard. But that's life. 🤷‍♀️

Both ⚫🚲 and ⚪🚲 have disc brakes.

The more expensive has hydraulic brakes. Pretty intense. Scared me when I tried it. 😳

What seatpost sorcery is this? I don't do too much mountain biking, so I did a double take today when I saw this #ebike seatpost rising after a guy passed me. Are these common on #ebikes? #cycling

An electric mountain bike is traveling on a dirt trail. The seatpost adjusts to a higher level as the rider stands on his pedals.

Rave to drivers who know how to share the road with cyclists - you are much appreciated!
Rant to the person who passed me earlier today only to make a right-hand turn a second or two later right in front of me, cutting me off 😕 Really?!
